I'm pretty sure Len (Hakzaw) is real close!

I've heard that this one is shaping up to be one of the worst in a decade or more.

Edit: It looks like KMitch is in Austin, that's pretty close also.

They say nothing like this intensity in last 12 years has hit Texas-Cat 4--wind are too high even for emergency vehicles and they expect rainfall of 4 feet in next 5 days--storm 200 miles wide --Houston to get 30 or more inches in a day --they expect $40 Billion in damages --oil and gas prices may be effected OMG

700 hundred national guard troops called out

I hope they are ready but have never had a storm like this before.

Definitely a huge threat now. Hopefully the damage won't be too bad. I used to live in Florida, but I never experienced anything near Cat 4.

If there is some bad damage, I hope our government really pushes for some weather mitigation infrastructure. Sandy showed us that modern methods can really help control the damage if they're put into use.

Be safe Len. Keep us updated. Put on an outdoor laser show if you need rescuing. ;)

So you are west of Galveston, len? Not a good place to be right now. Austin and Dallas are too far from the Gulf to cause serious problems. I have lived through my share of bad hurricanes. A few tornadoes too. Without the Gulf to cause a storm surge, once the thing is over land they tend to dissipate.

Galveston gets hit harder.... its an island. Landfall center was way west near Corpus C.
My river gets much higher up north of here..but when the high hits here ..it does not rise nearly as much.. never been standing water on road in front & my place is ~3 ft higher than the road.. but my shop and storage shack and carport are not.... so could get damage there..
sleep tonite may not come easily...

If you aren't going to evacuate, Len, try to stay safe. These are only getting worse every year now.

Len, please stay safe. You're better safe than not. Is it too late to evacuate?
Also same to anyone else going to be affected.

if a tree falls on my house or I lose a part or two my new neighbor has a stilt house brand new and very HD build .. & he did a lot of the work.. I think he has a brand new Gen as well..
power here goes out a lot... but they don't wait to fix.. ..Co..-op.
bushes close to the house are doing the hula.. and semi-loud bang must have been something airborn
I am in the outer band but the dirty side....my bet is on a rain event for my area..

hate to be a critter during one of these...
high water concentrates snakes.. etc..
sure would like to find another coral..unlikely as big or such an easy feeder as my last...sad... . 'coulda been a contendar' he escaped (from enclosure in Car Port..)
hope he is out spreading his awesome genes...a big one... 36 inches--record is 48..and likely a dead coral.. sad

I second that! It is easy for someone who doesn't really experience hurricanes to give advice like evacuate, but I watched Katrina and how people underestimated it. Please get out of there and take your lasers with you. :p

Once it's started, you have to sit it through unless there's a decent lull. Driving away during a storm is much more dangerous than just hunkering down in a decent structure. That's why evacuation orders are always given before landfall.

If Len's house is still okay with the wind, flooding is the bigger issue, and you don't drive during flooding events.

Yes, this is very true. I just hope everyone is going to be ok.
