On school days I get anywhere from 5 to 7 hours of sleep... I hate waking up so early. I'm definitely a night owl (I go to bed anywhere between 11:30 PM to 1 am) yet I still have to wake up at 6:30 am for school....eegghhh. :tired:

On weekends though I get more like 9 - 11 hours of sleep. :D

This is how my days consist.

Wake up 9am... uni till 4 pm
Rush home get ready
Work from 5pm to 12am
Get home
Internet
Internet
Internet
Assignment/uni work
Internet
Sleep at around 6am - 7am

So to answer your question, on average 2-3 hours a night. But weekends I crash and sleep for like 6-7 hours.

I do mod work on another forum so my sleeping patters can get quite erratic. My day job also doesn't give me a fixed schedule. On average though, I get five (5) hours of sleep every day.

The annoying thing is that when I happen to squeeze in a day full of rest, it's inevitable that I spend all that saved up rest on some random day the following week, either doing a tv series marathon or hitting the books, and of course, interwebz. :|

Not enough. That being said I get more than many people, but my sleep schedule is still pretty erratic. Being unemployed and looking for work I don't have to get up at a specific time in the morning aside from if I have to go somewhere that day, so I do get that major advantage over most people. Keep that in mind.

My "normal" routine is to sleep from 5:30AM until 1:30PM, or 7 hours. The 5:30AM part rarely changes, but many days I get up earlier, for example, today I got up at 10AM for a total of 4 1/2 hours sleep.

My "normal" shift is pretty close to my natural circadian rhythm. It is an 8-hour rhythm like most folks have, but shifted off from the "8am to midnight awake" that it is supposed to be. My natural circadian awake cycle is 12PM to 4AM, which is 4 hours forward from others.

I used to be able to function well on less than 7 hours of sleep every day when I was younger, but as I put on more years I find I can go less and less without adequate sleep. These days I can only manage two days a week of <6hrs/night without too much touble. When I was working I needed judicious use of stimulants to get me through the work day when I had less than 7hrs sleep, and even then mistakes were frequent.

I also have hypoglycemia though, so low blood sugar + sleep deprivation = bad.

I sleep 5-6 hours a night
I have had this same sleep pattern my whole life
When I was a boy, my parents made me and my brothers go to bed at 8pm
While my brothers slept, I stared out the window, dreaming of places to go and things to do

My students often *think* that they can live with less than 7-8 hours of sleep
(because they must to cover school, homework, work, and a social life)

The VAST majority of people NEED 7-8 hours of sleep a night

However, a recent study found a genetic marker for people like me

There is a very simple test to see if you have this genetic marker

When you do not have to wake up for any reason (holiday, weekend, etc), do you sleep in longer?

If you sleep longer on the weekend or when on vacation,
you are NOT getting enough sleep during your normal life ;)

[dad mode]
Sleep deprivation has some VERY significant costs (physical and mental)
If you are not getting enough sleep, alter your lifestyle

dave

Speaking of sleeping patterns I think the best for me is 5-6 hours sleep. It is a LOT easier to wake up after 5 hours sleep than it is with 7 or 8 hours sleep.

That is weird...

Do you "try" to sleep longer?
Your brain may be trying to run another 5-hour sleep cycle ;)
Try just getting up when you awaken naturally

I realize that this may be impractical if your work schedule is different than
your cycle or you have to "coordinate" going to bed and getting up with a partner

If that is not the case, you may be trying to wake up in a deep stage of sleep
Try shortening or lengthening the sleep time to find when you are at a lighter stage of sleep

Peace,
dave

I usually get 6-8 hours on a normal day. But this past week I've been so busy dealing with Chinese manufacturers I've been getting 3 hours of sleep tops.... I'd stay up till 3 AM or so the wake up at 5:30-6:00 :p

I usually get about 7-8 hours. :D Which seems to be about what I need. I won't sleep much longer than that even if I have no need to get up that particular day.

About 5-6 hours at night and 30-40 mins 'power nap' during the day if I get the chance.

For me that would be 7 hours. I will get a headache when I try to sleep longer.

I work from home on most days, so i sleep in a bit. usually go to bed around 1am and wake up at around 8:30am. weekends i am always out and go to bed around 3am and wake up around 11am

For me that would be 7 hours. I will get a headache when I try to sleep longer.

yeah i get that as well, if i try to sleep longer then 7-8hrs, i get a headache as well and more tired. I think dave is right, that brain might try to go into another sleep cycle and then we just get up in an hr or so into it.

2-3 hours most days until I crash on my days off.

7:30am - Get ready for Job 1
8:30am - Walk to work
9:30am - start work
4:30pm - finish Job one, head straight to Job 2
9:00pm-11:30pm - Finish Job 2 and walk home again
12:30am - arrive home and am not tired/internet
4:30am - sleep.

Not healthy I know.

Well, since I work part-time, and they know I'll never say no to covering because I need the hours, this number is always different. Plus if my dad is working from home, up at 8:30. So It can be anywhere from 3-5 when I close one night, then open the next day. Or 12-14 when I have to close or not work, and my dad's not home. Although I try to not go to bed too early, as I WILL oversleep for that 14+ range and feel horrible for the entirety of the next day.
