We get quite a few threads about one single news story, usually about someone pointing a laser at an aircraft or some new technological development that is laser related. I thought it might be good to have one thread where we can post news stories so they can mostly be found and discussed in one thread.

It seems also that many people don't watch, listen to, or read any news at all, or if they do then they only watch local news or news from their country. I think that is dangerous because then you will know little about what is going on in the rest of the world. Many people will end up asking what happened when they could have seen it coming.

The number of terrorist attacks in recent weeks and months is astonishing. We are in the beginning of a global economic collapse. The price of oil will keep dropping, it will soon drop below $20 a barrel, the wars are getting worse. There are going to be big problems for Europe, the Euro will decline in value, the Schengen area will cease to exist, the U.K. will withdraw from the EU, the refugee problem will only get worse. If you think this doesn't matter because everything is ok where you are then you are mistaken. I would encourage everyone to keep up on the latest news now more than ever.

So I invite everyone to post a link or short video to one of the latest news stories, if at least several people will do this regularly then I too will continue to post in this thread frequently.

Since this is mainly a science and technology oriented forum, please be sure to post science and technology news, especially anything laser related. We don't want only news on the wars and terrorist attacks, economy, price of oil, refugees, politics, but we will include those too.

So I will start off by posting a link to something interesting that is both laser and terrorism related:

Preemptive measure: India plans laser fences along Pakistan border - The Express Tribune

It may be a good idea to wear safety glasses when sneaking across that border.

I read something about oil being in the $20 range not too long ago. I thought it was crazy considering the price per gallon of gas is still around $1.60 by me. The last time I remember it being around $20 a barrel, gas was below $1 per gallon. 93 octane was also 20 cents more than 87 back then too. Now it's around 50 to 60 cents more per gallon.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is a laser news item, not breaking news but interesting. Don't try this at home!

https://www.yahoo.com/beauty/this-laser-will-change-your-eye-color-113810401693.html
So every octane from 87 to 93 is taxed to the tune 10 cents each. "well you know how I mean it" On the other note haven,t they heard of color contacts ouch!

Here is info on gasoline tax in the U.S. and you can see why they don't want cars with really good gas mileage, but they have found a solution to that. Sometime in the future all cars will have a black box with a GPS that keeps track of how far you drive, and you will be taxed by how many miles you drive that vehicle. Unfortunately this will also make available info on where your vehicle has been and when it was there.

There's two solutions to that. Maybe a third.

1. Buy an older car
2. Gut it and put your own motor and stuff in it.

The possible third would be to block the signals somehow.

If they check mileage every time you renew the registration, there won't be much you can do unless they allow exemptions for racing and dyno use. Just have to become friends with the track or dyno owners if you know what I mean.;) That's correct ma'am, 10,000 of the 10,500 miles I drove was on the racetrack.:D

They might not care if it was on the racetrack because it might be based on emissions also.

GPS signals are transmitted in the GHz range. Unless the car needs GPS for critical driving functions or internally uses components in the GHz range, the jammer signal shouldn't cause any mischief or harm to the car. Moreover, the GPS signals are very weak after it leaves the satellites and gets to your car so it could be jammed with a fairly small signal level.

I bet that even people who restore classic cars will have to have a tracker installed.
Rather that trying to physically block it, which will be illegal, we need to block it in the courts, but I know it's coming and we won't even know about it.

It will be mandated for all new cars starting ???? 2014 maybe??? and come with the car you buy, by the time they start charging for it they will have been out for 5 years, it may be in the 2012-2016 cars right now, OnStar could likely do this just as it is right now.

Another reason we don't want to be socialist, I know we are mixing threads here but this is already in the plans and much more, it's not a crazy conspiracy theory anymore, technology is ready to support the Orwellian nightmare.

@ OVNI just like the X-ray trucks that roam the streets will be the auto interface checkers, if your car is producing some disruptive noise and it turns out you did it on purpose....enemy of the state....CLINK

World war 3 is coming soon, and I don't mean to a theater near you. Everyone better be watching what's going on in the Middle East. Did anyone notice this? I have heard a couple of people on the radio before say that Saudi Arabia has nukes and that Iran probably does too but I didn't think it was likely. Have a look at these:

In case you didn't know it, both Saudi Arabia and Turkey have for the past five years been supporting the anti Assad Syrian Rebels who are now getting bombed out of existence. Both are threatening to invade Syria and have moved a massive amount of forces to the border. The Russians have also moved forces near the Turkish border including nukes.

There are actually multiple wars going on in the area at the same time with many countries involved so I won't bother to explain it all here, it would just take too long, but this is certainly something we should be worried about.

I think we might be OK here. There are some pretty marginal vehicles out there and by the time a substantial fraction of these older cars can be compelled to be retrofitted the government will probably be fighting for survival. Such retrofits will also be much easier to hack, even if the hack is to simply move/ remove/ transfer the devices form one vehicle to another. No way these add-ons will be able to incapacitate the carburetor based engine etc.

The enforcement of these laws will be easiest in the dense population centers where no one in their right mind will want to live anyway.

An interesting thought just came to me. Could you disable a tank with the stuff you can find in a big box store?
