Well, as usual around here the forecast for tomorrow has changed. They are calling for sunny skies with no clouds. Man, I hope this one's right.

One thing that I've never seen and probably never will with the naked eye is the 'shadow snakes'.
But even seeing some of the other cool things that happen with even a partial eclipse is awesome too, like these shadows through the trees.

Very cool, CE5. I was unaware of either of these effects. Not going to be in totality here, but will have to look for them now that I am aware. :thanks:

Well, we had a good 45min or so of decent viewing here before the clouds rolled in. I had my Coronado SolarMax 40 (H-alpha) all set up and ready to go, and we had a pair of Coronado Binomite (white light) binoculars. We had a good 75-80% coverage here, so not too bad. I was also able to observe some of the leaf shadows that were featured in the one vid clip.
Also noticed that someone else here started another thread and co-opted a clip that I had previously posted.

I watched it at just over 80%. Didn't have a fancy H-alpha scope like that, but somebody was willing to risk their scope for eyepiece projection which was neat. Otherwise, there were a lot of trees with the shadows. Definitely a cool experience, but I really want to see totality sometime.

We had over 95% coverage here and I got some excellent photos of the "leaf shadows" you posted the link to. Glad you did as I would have never thought to look otherwise. I'll post them a little later after I have time to load them to my computer and Imgur. :thanks:

oh ok i guess ill have to post a picture. will make a full post about this but for now have this nice photo i took of the diamond ring, 3 seconds before totality
edit: im still a little shaken from this eclipse. i need to go see more eclipses. these are truly amazing and once you see one in totality you will never forget.

@Rivem, well all that fancy gear didn't do me much good either Lol! dang clouds. I was considering going all out and configure the rig for pics, but once I noticed the cloud cover was on the move towards our location and there was already some high thin haze, I decided to just mount it on the Manfrotto tripod and simply observe what I could for the brief time we had.
@Paul, 95% cool beans! I was also following all this on the tube, and some of the smoke from the wildfires in Oregon and Montana, may have made for an even more unusual Red, eclipse due to the haze refracting in the upper atmosphere. Did you notice any reddish tinge even with the 95%?

@Lux Nitida Those are some awesome pictures. I wish I had a decent camera setup to get pictures myself. And also... you're from tamaqua... small world. Pottsville's my home town. Guess I'm not the only one from the skook with a 589

Honestly, even though it was overcast when I woke up, I had that feeling when totality happened of a "it's about to rain day". I was expecting a much more darker feeling, almost like sunset honestly. I only had a totality of 66% though, so I guess nowhere near enough for that.

Wow, small world indeed! Two 589s in da skook how about that, lol! :crackup: As far as this setup for these pics, it was by the seat of my pants. I literally just carefully secured my eclipse glasses over my camera lens using my smartphone camera to line up the shot without using my own eyes just in case I slipped the filter out of line I wouldn't take a hit of focused sunlight to my eye through the viewfinder. Was very happy with the results as I never attempted photos like this before. But my experience with photographing lasers has given me confidence and the safety techniques I used here.
