goggles for eclipse?

It is sunny here and I got some excellent views of a near totality solar eclipse. Tried to get photos of it, but only a couple look anything like an eclipse. Got some great photos of the shadows through the trees. It looked surreal. It got very dark here at the near totality. Really the best solar eclipse i will probably ever see.

Just finished cutting an acre of grass..
Man it's hot..... (Not Complaining...)

Saw that the eclipse had started...
At that tome it looked like Pacman..

My neighbor has 2 kids aged 10 and 7..
I asked them if they knew that an eclipse
was happening today...
What's an eclipse was the response...
I went back to the shop and got my
binoculars and a flat black sheet of
cardboard to show them the eclipse.
The kids called their parents and they
all saw it happening..

The wife asked me when I had recorded
it yesterday....:thinking:
I told her it was a pair of binoculars and
not a video projector....
Oh BTW she is a school teacher...

I was making the eclipse viewing boxes in the late 60's when I was a kid:thinking: Never worked nor I got to see one but still
and now my friend who works in a day care she's telling me they are teaching and showing even the really young one's..
Even though your neighbor's a school teacher, is she home schooling her kids?
Come to think of it, just what does she teach?

Have no clue.. didn't ask...
The kids however are curious as heck..
One if them is into and learning Quad copters
after seeing me flying my quads. Last Xmas
the Eachine E010 was on sale and I bought
the kids each one. Of course 2 different colors.
Only one really likes the Quad flying.
The younger is a cowboy and rides his ATV like
Evel Knievel....

I took advantage of the 2/3 eclipse and watered the banana trees. It's kind of nice having sunlight, but little intensity. After it all, it is blinding bright just standing on the driveway next to my white garage doors.

I kept thinking there's no way I'll risk money on a solar filter on my scope when there's a chance of clouds. Then soon came the time when it didn't matter because I'd probably both over pay and get it too late. So I got an idea and tested the survival blanket you get in a first aid kit. I had it set aside knowing it would be useful some day. I shined a 350 lumen LED flashlight through some layers and found 2 layers was almost dark enough and very clear, but any more layers was super blurry. So, I ended up gluing 2 layers to a protein powder bottle and stuffed in in my scope, and wore 2 pairs of sunglasses. It worked great, then I ripped it off the second totality started. I also glued my eclipse lenses to binoculars which worked great too except it is hard to find the sun in a pitch black sky. I'll keep them on likely as solar binoculars. It kinda sucks 2.5 minutes is such a short time I barely remember the eclipse.

So, now are the eclipse glasses good laser glasses?

I don't see how. You can't see a thing through them. A direct laser strike with a 1 watt laser would destroy them.

can confirm, just tested it on an old pair and less than a second it blew straight through it no effort

Whoa, that's wierd. Does rep power count appear only after 50 posts? I thought I was getting good points, but it always said 0, and people with negative also say 0, but they too have under 50 posts. Mine just appeared as the actual number.

Yup. 50 is the magic number.

good laser goggles shouldnt take half a second to burn through. my laser goggles i have for my blue and greens cant be burnt through at all without focusing even after 2 mins

That would certainly depend on the Power of the
Laser being used and the Model of Laser Googles.

For practical purposes I figure the eclipse glasses would provide better protection against a direct unscattered reflection than normal glasses which seem to let so much light pass through. I keep thinking the eclipse glasses have extra reflective surfaces, but I remember they are not as reflective as they could be. So what about glasses made out of a single layer of those reflective mylar survival blankets? I might go do some testing now, but I only have a little 250mW laser to use.

I tested my goggles and some shiny mylar with a focused beam. Both failed quickly when the focus was perfect, but the goggles being thick would melt and cool and absorb the energy before the beam could penetrate. The mylar instantly burned through. And one layer thick is probably not safe enough to look at 10mw directly.
