Gave Facebook the boot - never felt better - anyone else?

A little over two weeks ago I gave facebook the boot. I fully deleted (not just deactivated) my account, and much to my surprise, I haven't looked back.

At first I was more or less pushed into it; after a hack attempt on various accounts I hold, facebook wanted me to prove my identity and demanded government ID as proof. I laughed it off as a phishing attempt until I googled and realised it was a change in their terms from 2015 onwards. My response was as predicted for anyone who values their liberty. So I left the site, permanently.

At first I felt I was leaving all my friends behind, almost like leaving a club I'd long been a member of. It didn't last; within a few days I'd already spoken to several people on the phone, something I've not done for ages and had forgotten how nice it was. My evenings are generally more productive, and I feel less likely to procrastinate. I've also finished a book I'd been reading for ages.

And of course; there are discussion forums, like this one, which I have rediscovered my love for. All in all a far more pleasant experience - and not having facebook crap on my phone has led to battery life I forgot I ever had.

So - anyone else left facebook or never even joined in the first place? What do you think of it?

I've been considering it.

How did you DELETE it? I only see "deactivate".

Not a Facebook fan, or social media in general. I can't stand people posting mundane things as a way to inflate their ego. And stealing content.

I have Facebook as you probably know trencheel, but only really post when something interesting happens. I do get quite frustrated at all the politics and short unnecessary posts some people decide to share. I don't have Twitter or anything of the sort, really only Skype & FB :yh:

Not a fan of Facebook at all, but I don't think I'll ever get rid of the account with how my friends are. You'd think they're allergic to phone calls and slowly growing intolerant to texting. :( At least they'll visit in person.

I'm very inactive since I really don't appreciate most of the content people put up, so I pretty much exclusively use it to announce events and for messenger.

Sometimes I wish the internet would go down worldwide for a few weeks just to get people connected in person, but that'd be dangerous nowadays.

I was active on it but I think it was because it was the done thing. I'd only joined in 2011 or so (which in the grand scheme of things made me very late to the party) and it was after much convincing from a friend that I did it. I've been looking for an excuse to leave for ages and this was it. I think if people use the fact that you're off Facebook to drop contact with you then it signals a fundamental flaw in the friendship; and I think this problem is likely why people are so superficial nowadays. Humanity is changing but we're in danger of losing ourselves to the persona we invent to fit in.

I would like to move out onto the side of a mountain and get off the grid all together, I post too much online as it is, the hell with a facebook, it can also be time consuming I hear.

I do like the access to real information online, our news is so pre packaged and missing a lot of what's really going on, but posting my daily life play by play...NO Thanks.

Have you seen these morons with their nose stuck in their pocket portal walking off hillsides and crashing their cars playing some virtual app game?

LOL, now that will be a good youtube video, smartphone dummies marching like blind lemmings into everything.

It's been one year for me. And yes I concur, I have never looked back.(I simply haven't logged on) Congratulations trencheel303. !
I agree with your motives.

I have however made an exception. Google plus.
It's. PERFECT place to view, post interesting ideas and pages. It's not super popular yet so there less trolling and drama.
Anyone else have a Google plus account or tips? I'm new to it.

If it were not for messenger I would part with it, but messenger is the way I end up communicating with my friends the most. Have been a member since 2004, still have barely 200 "friends" on there. Very vast majority of whom I haven't been in touch with in a decade.

I would delete my facebook account if not for groups, particularly one group where local paragliding sessions are planned. A lot of local communities lack any other way of reaching each other online unless you personally know everyone and have their telephone number etc.

I wasn't on facebook for the longest time. I had an account but just never used it. I would check it once maybe every 6 months or so. Then my father in law said he hacked my account and changed my profile picture and some other stuff. Since then I have been checking it far far too often. One thing I did do though is block all of my stuff so no one can see it. I also changed my last name on facebook so I cannot be searched for easily. I tend to be a bit of a troll (believe it or not) and I enjoy making sarcastic comments so I try not to log on or be a part of it too much because if I see a stupid post I AM going to make a comment. I don't do that on Forums though because I have a respect for them that I just don't seem to have on Youtube or Facebook.

I too have a google plus account but rarely use it.

as bullshitty as this is gonna sound, i've felt a lot more of an inner peace since leaving facebook, and I'm not going through the easiest part of my life right now. I'm confident now that I will never go back.
