Looks like it could mess up Halloween.

MIAMI (Reuters) - Tropical cyclone Sandy revved back up to hurricane strength on Saturday as it churned toward the U.S. northeast coast where it threatens to become one of the worst storms in decades.
The late-season storm has been dubbed "Frankenstorm" by some weather watchers because it will combine elements of a tropical cyclone and a winter storm and is forecast to reach the U.S. coast close to Halloween.
Forecast models show it will have all the ingredients to morph into a so-called "super storm."
Governors in states along the U.S. East Coast declared emergencies on Friday, with officials urging residents to stock up on food, water and batteries....

The jet stream must have picked up for them to predict such a sharp westerly turn there
Combine this with the full-moon high tides and I would be visiting friends in another state if I were there :/

The latest storm track puts Sandy hitting the coast, at Atlantic City, at around midnight Sunday/Monday

That is perfect timing to coincide with the full-moon high-tide :(

So add 4-8 feet of storm surge to the high tide

If it follows its current track, a lot of people are screwed :(

Flooded subways in New Jersey and New York could disrupt commerce for a couple of weeks :banned:

Stay safe people

Peace,
dave

It is a category 1 hurricane in the middle of a Nor'easter

High tide + 4-8 ft. storm surge + 6-12 inches of rain (or 2 ft. of snow in the higher elevations) = one heluvalot of water

--EDIT--
Oh yeah. I forgot that you also have to add 15-20 waves on top of the surge

The Airport at Cairns has an elevation of about 3 meters (~10 feet)
If Sandy were headed toward Cairns, would you be worried

The wind damage is not where the danger of Sandy lies

Let's hope that some of the lessons that they learned from Irene were effective

Peace,
dave

Nope :D I love cyclones/hurricanes. Cairns got the edge of Cat5 Yasi last year, I recorded a peak 230km/h gust at my place, and it was quite awesome standing outside in the crazy wind. Not so glamorous further down South though, it made a bit of a mess.

Things, let's put it this way.... You would have no internet for more than a week, if you were lucky. Worried now?

it is going to get real bad about 6PM eastern time for anyone near the coast of around NYC. They are expecting a tidal surge of 6 to 11 feet. Even now there is flooding, but nothing compared to later. It is 10:45AM EST. I am going to recommend to my boss in sunny California that we should lave at 12 noon to be safe. All of the trucking firms I use are closed today, all mass transit is shut down in NJ and NYC. It will be an unprecedented storm. I made sure every electronic device has a full charge and that my laser batteries are also fully charged.
