I would have thought guns would not be an issue in Canada. They always brag about such a low gun related crime rate they have compared to the US.

We were built on hunting and trapping, so rifles and the like are pretty common
we just dont aim at one another as much :na:

We have handguns here, but they are not nearly as common place. In recent years
especially in Toronto, we have a lot of gun related crimes and homicide, but are a result of
illegal weapons (mainly pistols) being imported and sold on the street.

One thing is for sure, the criminal element is far better armed than the average citizen.
People have been arrested for assaulting and or killing a burglar in their own house.

This guy fired a couple of warning shots and was charged for being unsafe after 3
guy were pitching Molotov's at his house... caught on camera too, scroll down the page.

How can that happen if he has no enemies?

Even where I live you are allowed to use lethal force if you are in fear of your life. Thats why I always carry a knife. :eg:

The low firearm murder assault rate in Canada is the result of fewer people per square mile

They don't point guns at each other as often because they are not in each others' space very often ;)

Canada is a VERY big place

However, we have more people *just here in Southern California* than there are in the *entire nation* of Canada

Overcrowding causes some VERY significant psychological shifts to take place

That and, of course, that they are aware that The Queen would be disappointed in them if they shot one of her subjects <snerk>

Peace,

They really have a Queen?? Shows how dumb I am. No wonder they are screwed up. You have a woman running your county, LOL. I know, we have a (blank) running ours. But its only for 8 years at the most, and he is still a man.

It boggles my mind that some of these large, up to date, countries stills have a royal hierarchy. One family, in charge forever? Sorry, thats messed up. How can things change without new blood in the system?

Hey we still have Englands Queen *snigger*

We tried to become a stand-alone country years ago but for some reason it was voted to stay under her rule.

Talk about failure...

EDIT: More failure from our lonely country...

Australian Billionaire to enlist China to build Titanic II

I heard this on the radio and when asked about if it was going to be unsinkable he replied "The original Titanic only sank because it had a hole in it... we're going to design this one without any holes"

Well hopefully the queen doesn't have that much power here in Canada...

Yeah it is true that Canada has less than the population of all of California! I know this is kind of a semi controversial statement, but the difference in violence and crime between Canada and the U.S. partly has to do with disparity between the "haves" and "have nots."

In countries where there is far less discrepancy, between the rich and the poor there is FAR less crime. For example, it is very hard for some people to move out of the ghetto. They do not choose this life and are sometimes forced into gangs just to survive and not be victims themselves of the gangs. It can be hard not to be sucked into this life and once you have a criminal record for something like selling drugs and it can be very hard to even get a "nomal" job ever again and integrate back into society.

These social inequalities are often divided among racial lines according to the social history of that demographic within the country.

Canada has a terrible history in it's treating of the native people and there was practically a genocide of the native people here. Native children were forced into residential schools and forcefully taken away from their family where some were even experimented on, abused in many different ways and basically stripped of their culture in order for the next generation to have no link with their past in order to destroy their culture and way of life. It is no wonder that some native people in Canada are separated from their true identity, their past, etc. and live difficult lives stuck between two worlds and suffer in poverty, have addictions, etc.

In countries where there is not such a stark contrast between the rich and poor there is almost no crime. Take Japan for example or some northern European countries which have extremely high taxes but also have almost non existent crime because there are social programs that prevent anyone from living in squalor, and in fact there are practically no homeless people. I think you will find once everyone is taken care of and if you use "harm reduction" to deal with addictive substances by not criminalizing drug use or sale, you will have no reason for criminal elements to be able to profit since drugs are legal.

This is another way to eliminate much of the crime since there can be no profit from "marked up street prices" for any illicit industries such as drugs, prostitution etc. and thus there will be no criminal organizations formed that are involved in violent crime, as well as no no need for addicts to steal and commit crime in order to afford their $400 a day drug habits because the cost of drugs would drop dramatically with this "harm reduction" approach. The European countries that have legalized drugs actually have far less drug abuse problems than we have, and there is no illegal drug industry related violence. And with better social programs where everyone is taken care of, there will be not such a discrepancy between haves and have nots that has lead to much of the crime in our society.

Just some food for thought... "Steps off soapbox" :p

I dont agree with that. Not in the US anyway. We have so many opportunities to advance its almost impossible to lose. People just dont want to put the work in. Its easier to steal, and blame other people for your problems. Every state has programs to help you "up". But people get lazy and rely on the state programs. In the city next to me they have 4th generation welfare families. So they are saying that in 4 generations they cant work and support their family?? Thats total BS. And repression is just a part of life, deal with it. We have a black president now. If he can do it everyone can too.

Good point there. I guess I shouldn't have worded it so "black and white" so to speak. While it is hard for some to make it out of poverty, many can your right. We have the same kind of welfare abuse here as well. I didn't mean to criticize the U.S. in any way I am American as well and I love it down there, but it does seem there is more violence in the U.S. for some reason compared to other large civilized countries..

I think the truth is that we are on a downward economic spiral globally. In my opinion a lot of it has to do with the fact that we have reached the peak amount of oil to be found, and as we have less and less it will be impossible to ever continue economic growth and sustain the economy and system we have today as oil becomes increasingly scarce and steadily more towards being prohibitively expensive. Even offshore drilling etc. won't make up for this. It is interesting that the amount of oil reserves in Saudi Arabia is a state secret, because they know if they released the fact that it is dwindling rapidly that all hell would break lose.

Until we figure out an alternative energy source to run all parts of the economy from transportation, production, electricity generation etc. we can expect a really bad outlook for job availability in the future as it will become too expensive to transport, manufacture goods etc. using oil as the scarcity increases. Couple that with increasing automation in many industries and the replacement of humans with computers and robots which could happen in everything from transportation, education, military, factories etc. and we are "sh*t out of luck..."

I think as things get worse and jobs become even more scarce there will be even more instability in every country, and thus more need for the government to justify "homeland security" to deal with domestic unrest and enact more unconstitutional and draconian laws to deal with an unruly population suffering from massive unemployment, high fuel costs, inflation, etc..

Interesting you say that. I was watching the Discovery channel and there is this program called Frozen Planet. It talked about global warming ans such. As I watched it I caught a small piece of information. Because the polar caps are thawing it opens the waterways for oil drilling. The world is rushing now to make claims there. Russia was first, and there was a big controversy in the UN about it.

I always wondered why people got heated over not believing global warming is real. After all, there are really no negatives being conservative with the environment. So why would people be against it? Its because they can get more oil now. They dont want you to conserve. If you conserve they lose money by the billions. So once again the 1% is changing protocol so they can make even more money.

If you want to talk conspiracy. We have machines that can release huge magnetic pulses that can change the weather. These machines are peppered across the globe. I think its more than a coincidence that the weather is changing at an alarming rate, and all of a sudden a new form of wealth has emerged from it. And one side of a political party is try to tell you its not happening, yet they are first in line to benefit from its results. I mean, if accelerated global warming is not real, then why is the world spending huge amounts of money staking claims in an area that is not suppose to be changing.

That is a really good point! I totally agree.

I always found it weird that people believe that government made up global warming as a conspiracy to charge carbon taxes and control us. The fact is as you say, they do not want you to consume less and use less oil. I really do not believe that the government created global warming as a scam as many top politicians are the ones most connected to the oil industry and are always the ones to fight against putting more caps or control on carbon emissions and greenhouse gasses. Denying global warming but readying for drilling in the arctic as the ice melts out of the way, so true!! :D

Go figure, sounds like they want to accelerate this as crazy as it sounds. HAARP?

I remember in a course I took called intro to the atmosphere in College, we learned that there are currents that bring warm waters to much of Europe and create the temperate conditions there but that the current would stop flowing if the temperature increased just ever so slightly. If the currents stopped, apparently the weather in Europe would be much much colder actually. Also, there are a ton of low lying cities that could be flooded with rising sea levels as all that ice melts including parts of New York, Miami etc...

Greed really is the downfall of humankind. :scowl:

Greed really is the downfall of humankind. :scowl:

As the atmosphere heats up, more ice melts from the poles
The ice that melts is "fresh" water
Fresh water is less dense than salt water
The fresh water will "float" on top of the salt water
This layer of fresh water will prevent the transfer of warmer salt water (heated at the equator) up toward the poles
If enough fresh water builds up, it will force the breakdown of the trade currents
The trade currents bring warmth from the equator to the northern latitudes
No heat from the equator to the northern latitudes will lead to the next ice age

Here's the irony

Global warming is the mechanism by which the earth triggers an ice age

I've always found it curious why people worry about global warming and effects like ocean level rise. This may or may not happen, and would cause some problems... but compare it to what an ice age will do. Where ice ages are concerned it is only a question of -when-, not -if- it will happen.

And it's also not a matter of thinking only of the short term, since the really serious problems of global warming, if they will happen, will present themselves mostly beyond our lifetime.
