Re: Everyone should get rid of firefox and explore

I've been using Opera on my home machine for 2 years, it sort of helps to load things faster (super slow Dial Up). I like the completely useless widgets. :)

I actually really like it. I found different interfaces that suit me. Also, the Speed Dial thing is cool.

Speaking of RAM, I just recently added 2 1-gig sticks of DDR DIMM to my other 2 1-gig sticks. So it SHOULD read as ~4gig but it only reads as 2.87 gigs. Ideas?

I do think Opera seems to be a lot faster though... I also really like the tabbing system, for example. how it saves all the pages that were on there last. It's great for ongoing projects w/o having to save them. Also, I like the side panel system... showing Transfers, Page Info, etc.

NOTE: vista 32 bit version only reads up to 3 gigs. to use your full 4 gigs, u gotta get either windows XP, or Vista 64 bit

3 gigs o ram 4 me!!!

Re: Everyone should get rid of firefox and explore

I used opera a long time ago, maybe 7 or 8 yrs ago. It was fast then compared to other browsers, but wouldn't load many pages. Especially stuff written with Frontpage, or any DHTML at the time. But I should give it another shot now it's been so long.

Re: Everyone should get rid of firefox and explore

I have been using opera for a few years too.I have to say it's my favorite browser. It can download from torrents too :D I got a 9 mbps download speed once :p From a server in another country, and my internet connection ussually sucks big.I didn't really use mozila so I wouldn't know, but IE sucks big big huge b@llz.They've only introduced tabbed browsing in 7.0 while opera and firefox were having it for ages(I think mozila had it even when it was called firebird :-/ )

Oh and the WL page is all screwy in Opera :p It's probably getting clogged with all the BS on their site :D :D :D

Re: Everyone should get rid of firefox and explore

My take on all this:
I have always used firefox since primary school. I went out of my way to learn some things I shouldn't know about my school's network to find out what it took to use it there.
In my experience it is THE fastest. I decided to just run some tests and here are my results.

I loaded 5 tabs in each browser. eBay, Microsoft.com, Google Docs, Gmail, and LPF home.
I set them all as homepage tabs, and with nothing else running started them one at a time and timed them.
BrowserRAM usedLoad time
IE42,430k2min 23 sec
FireFox25,129k19 seconds
Opera33,982k41 seconds

Test bed:
Vista Home Premium SP1 32 bit
2.5GB DDR2 800 5-5-5
E4500 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2ghz @ 2.4ghz 2MB L2 Cache
Gigabyte P35-DS3L board
10,000RPM 80GB WD SATA hard drive
89% RAM free, 94% CPU free @ time of testing
512k down 512k up internet connection

So as we all know. IE sucks. But it seems, at least for me, Firefox is faster than Opera. And with good reason... I have spent some time tweaking my connection settings for multiple server connection threads etc, to get the best performance possible.

One more thing I have to say... PLEASE DO NOT USE ADBLOCK!
Annoying as they are, allowing ads to be present benefits others without harming you.
Using adblock means advertisers do not get their pageviews, which means they don't pay the advertising hosts, which means that in a case like this forum, using adblock is going to end up hurting c0ld's income and the forum at large!
It also especially hurts small businesses who can barely afford any advertising, which is the backbone of a small business, and perhaps ads not being viewed ends up meaning they can't advertise due to increased cost from the hosts due to less ads getting through.

ditto on the ads, I even once in a while click on a few of them, heck, as blu said, its not hurting me, just helping others...

very interesting what you can do with a few clicks and a good 30 seconds...

In general I don't use adblock, but if a site gets too annoying with animated ads, etc, flashbolock it is. This is the only way to ensure there is a downside for advertisers that create ads that are deemed TOO annoying, and gives them an incentive to limit this.
