Question This ever happen to anyone? - magnet destruction

So yesterday I received a quartet of neodymium magnets from eBay in the mail. I was especially happy in that their magnetic strength was rated to be N50 (closely following the highest mass produced rating for a permanent magnet, N52).

Anyway, after a day of playing with them and admiring their impressive force, I had allowed two to collide (just an extremely small distance, inches) and they appeared to have badly chipped one another. (Pics below)

I am rather disappointed to have had learned about their fragility like this. I was just wondering if you guys have had similar experiences with these types of magnets, or if my eBay magnets were just poorly constructed.

If anything, let this be a forewarning to anyone else looking to buy neodymium magnets, these things are brittle!

The four magnets with the chip sitting atop.

The chips I pulled out.

Three of the magnets, the top one also chipped.

I've chipped weaker magnets doing the same thing. I guess they are just fragile.

lawl I just had that happen to me earlier today! Mine are the DealExtreme: $4.26 Super Strong Rare-Earth RE Magnets (20mm x 2mm / 10-Pack). I let one attract itself into the block of the other nine and it cracked in half. Gonna have to be more careful now.

It's awesome when you get spherical shaped ones and roll them close to each other and watch them collide and spin around a million rpm.

Just tried that with my DX BB sized ones, that's so cool.

Medium to large regularly shaped NdFeB's tend to stay together better, but smaller oblong ones (regrettably) are fragile. Found that out the hard way with the first set I harvested out of an old HDD...

I've got come huge 1s (at least they seem huge to me.. biggest I own), 3/4 inch cube and another thats 1in wide 1/2 inch tall and 2 inches long, pull strength of about 70 pounds, same with the cubes. My older 1/2 inch cubes are all chipped up. They were my 1st, and without experience i ruined them.

I found a site where they're the cheapest I've seen

cPath_1osCsid=7f554acd9a06cd1d9362200e8dcfb565 | Applied Magnets : Strong Neodymium Magnets - discount wholesale prices.

edit:.. with stronger magnets WATCH OUT for blood blisters, the magnets will either pinch your skin so hard that it will give you 1... or it'll just pinch your skin off

The magnets from a HDD are brutally strong (I think so anyhow)

The ones that are semi triangular can hold the heaviest of objects on the fridge door.

Great for holding curtains together too.
