Hi All,

I am going to propose to my girlfriend very soon and I had an idea to modify the ring box a bit.
I got the idea while on the hunt for a ring.. a salesperson in one of the jewelry stores was all excited to show me how one company presented their rings. It was set in a box and when opened a little blue-white LED would light up and make the diamond sparkle. Of-course just for that presentation they asked several hundreds more. Oh well :)
I got the ring somewhere else, and I read that some diamonds fluoresce under UV light like so...:

So what do you think of this:

I will get one or two of these pens Newest 5mW 405nm Violet Purple Blue Ray Blue Laser Pointer Pen | eBay

Make sure that the output is no more than 5mw or so, remove diode, detach the lens and fix the diode itself in such a way that it illuminates the ring. I will then use the on-off switch from one of those singing cards and fix the driver inside the box so that the circuit closes when the box is opened. In addition I'll use 2 lithium tablet cells for power-source.

The end product will look similar to this but with 405nm diode as light source

I predict that the fluoresce will be completely washed out by any ambient light, unless you plan to propose in very dark place. I would suggest to go for a clear, white LED with a high viewing angle to bring out the brilliance of the stone, just like in the store.

Good point. I shall test how it looks today with my weaker 405nm handheld. As for the setting I was planing on doing it in the restaurant, and ask for a more romantic aka. darker and secluded seat.

Also remember that the laser wont show any of the bright "sparky" colours, as it only has one wavelength, so that's something to think about.

That is true as well :( well I was hoping that the fluorescence from the boxes lining will provide enough of emitted ligh. The problem is that the fluorescence spectrum range will be pretty narrow at that excitation wavelength as well.

Props dude. i hope it all goes well.
and id say using white light, that way you get the "rainbow" effect
Get the colors of the diamond and the ring itself.

Before you go to the trouble of making this special 405 ring box do you know if the diamond you are giving here will fluoresce ?

Not all diamonds do...

I wouldn't bother using laser diodes for this, just use UV LEDs. Laser diodes will require additional cooling, drivers etc. LED's just connect to a battery and off you go.

Grats I hope it all goes well. I second the use UV led's idea. It will be a lot easier to work with.

Thanks all! I have checked the ring with my 100mW 405.. No dice. Very weak fluorescence emission :( I'll still consider the white LED :)
