How many of you are musicians and play an instrument? Be it a Piano, Guitar, a recorder, a horn, or da kazoo.....Lets talk about it!

one stop thread for all things instruments!

Personally, I play alot of things, but mainly Clarinets and Saxophones.

Anyone got something fun or unique they'd like to share?

^Same, never would have guessed! When I was young I can remember playing the guitar and piano but stopped for some reason. Haven't really gotten into any other instruments from then :(

I started taking violin lessons when I was 6 years old. It was a compromise my parents made since I had wanted to play the guitar since I can remember. That came to pass when i was 9 years old and took lessons and music theory for the next 4 years. By the time I was 18 I was an accomplished guitarist and played professionally until I disbanded my last band at 24. I used to play as much as 8 hours a day and before I broke my left radius in a Colles fracture and the plate that was inserted to keep the bone straight came loose and cut most of my flexor tendons in that hand and made it impossible for me to play any longer at age 56. By then there was nothing i couldn't play and used to make arrangements where people who had two guitars to get the effect, I could do it all on one. To say I miss that is a gross understatement. It was literally who I was!

yeah, thought it'd be a fun thing to share. I mainly play a Bass clarinet (I have two, one in both ranges to Eb and to low C), but I do play the normal soprano clarinet and a curved soprano saxophone in Bb as well as an Eb Alto Clarinet, but that is pretty much a dead instrument in bands today. I've wanted to learn guitar, but I've never gotten around to it. I can kinda play a piano a little, but not really well due to lack of practice rather than know-how.

That's quite unfortunate. Music has always been something I loved since I was little too. I started a bit later though about 6th grade. and really took off about late 7th grade when my friend picked up a clarinet, so I joined him and that really was what got me started. he has long since quit due to circumstances, but I continue to play now and then to this day on an old vintage Buffet from the late 1920s. I doesn't even have a case anymore, and I need to make a case for it badly, but due to its irregular dimensions that will be quite a task.

I play piano! I've lately been perfecting fur elise.

It's a great composition, you can never go wrong with Beethoven. I still remember how to play it from muscle memory, but I don't play piano anymore. I did really often when I was a lot younger and was pretty good at it but that stopped somewhere around when I started high school.

Paul, that sounds tragic, I'm sorry to hear it. Hoping you still made some good memories though!

Yeah, I've still got the memories and the knowledge, but without a very dexterous left hand, I don't have the skill any longer. :(

Does air guitar count? :p

No, I seriously have no musical skill at all. :(
But it is cool to see some on here can play an instrument or more.

My parents tried, oh boy did they try with all the piano an violin lessons as a child:)
I also just didn't take to it, could be lack of wanting it or again a unsteady hand or lack of finger dexterity:undecided:
Still have the beautiful upright piano to this day they bought for my sister and I.
Other friends would try to tease me when I couldn't play because of my lessons but it never bothered me.

I tried to learn how to play the piano, but I could not handle playing more than one hand at a time. My coordination is pretty poor. Not everyone can do it.
We will just stick to making the laser shows. :p

That's a real shame, it'd probably depress me if I wasn't able to play. :(

I hear you, although for me it's singing and playing at the same time :p. No problem with hand coordination, can play a little piano, nothing fancy but I can play a little.

Used to play drums, play a little bass from time to time, whenever I'm at my dads really, he brought his Musicman Stingray over, nice bass that. Have played mandolin and banjo in the past, but not something I ever really focused on. My banjo is still back in Scotland.

It is good that you can play Diachi. I can hand tap to a beat. :D
I sometimes wish I had better coordination and could play, but I don't really need to. :p

yes. I think it's always been a worthwhile thing to learn, even if you don't do it forever. I think there's an instrument out there for everyone, its just a matter of finding out what it is...even if its just your own voice.

Hoping that some of my talent was transferred genetically to my daughter, I started asking her if she wanted to learn to play an instrument by the time she was 3 years old. At 5, in kindergarten, she asked if she could take piano lessons at the private school where I had her enrolled. Of course I said yes, but she didn't stick with it and later she admitted to me that she had done this in order to avoid nap time. I had already purchased a keyboard, amp and stool for her to practice. Then at age 7 she asked if she could learn to play the guitar, so I bought her a 3/4 size guitar and proceeded to teach her myself. But, unfortunately she still didn't stick with it. Then at age 12 she wanted to join the school band and we discussed which instrument she should take. I suggested the flute as I was a Jethro Tull fan and so she took the flute. But, this time I rented a flute for her. After she stuck with it for two years I bought her a silver plated nickel flute in a case. It was quite expensive, but I can't remember the brand. She ended up sticking with that for 5 years and can still play, though she doesn't much any longer. I guess she ended up with most of her mother's talent. She couldn't carry a note in a bucket.
