Carrying a knife for "protection" is INCREDIBLY stupid. There are three basic scenarios which are likely to occur, and in all of them carrying a knife makes it worse:
1) Thug carries a gun. You pull the knife, you get shot and die instead of just losing your phone and money.
2) Thug carries a knife. He is far more experienced in knife fighting and when you pull your own knife he turns from threatening to attacking and stabs you. You die.
3) Thug is unarmed. He is still more experienced in fighting and when you pull your knife will probably get it from you and stab you. Otherwise you accidentally stab him and go to jail for being the one who pulled the knife, even if it was in self defence.
DO NOT CARRY A KNIFE FOR SELF DEFENCE.

I agree, if you want to defend yourself, just learn a martial art. These are usually more than enough to keep yourself protected IN A SITUATION where you would be able to defend yourself (ie thug doesn't have a weapon)

yeah in america we can have them we just cant carry them... would someone like to explain the logic behind not being able to carry one to me, and switch blades to. are they really that much more dangerous because you hit a button thats not attached to the blade?(assisted-opening is legal because you touch part of the blade to open it.) and with butterfly knives it takes just as long if not longer to open them than a normal knife. is it because the people who usually carry them are thugs? because im pretty sure theyll just go buy a normal knife.

From what I know butterfly knives can't legally be carried because thugs would go around 'twirling' them to scare people. The same applies to switchblades. Basically they're intimidating to people so big brother stepped in and banned them. Really stupid right? I mean if I ran into a thug with a knife I really wouldn't care what kind of knife it is.
I love the logic in this country. Guns for all, but heaven forbid you carry around a certain kind of knife.
Also is it true about sharpened ninja stars being banned in NY? If so ROFLMAO! Wonder who thought of that law:drunk:

Well here's the deal. A lot of muggers are looking for the easiest possible target being the cowards that they are. If you're armed with a knife/taser/pepper spray etc they'll sometimes back off and look for easier victims. They'd rather not get into a knife fight and risk getting injured themselves or killing you and getting caught.
In any event if they're armed with a gun or there's more than one mugger it's probably a good idea to just hand over your money or make a run for it.

I always collected knifes, and the most part of the times, i made my own ones, fixed, foldable, butterflies, and, very few, gravity and spring-slide ones (but this was when i was working for a company and had a lot of free time, now i barely have time for breath, so no more artigianal knifes )
Most part of my collection is at home, part was gifted away in the years, and still have around some pieces that i had started, and never had the time to complete (and i guess i never find the time for do that, if things goes this way)
Anyway, just as example, i have here in the shop one of the last "heavy butterflies" (just for open the cardboard boxes) that i never had time to complete, so took a pair of pics ..... it's still "raw" (i mean, no decorations, no finishing, just the parts filed and assembled), but can give you an idea (the caliper is just for compare the sizes )

Sorry, Seb, I disagree. I carry a pocket-sword that has successfully made some thugs reconsider aggression toward me...it was a "that's not a knife, this is a knife" kind of situation. It's better to carry something than nothing at all, IMHO. A good sharp knife is all it takes to make that one cut that will paint the walls red, and make an attacker re-think his actions.
Years ago, during some law enforcement classes I took, I learned a statistic that made me reconsider the gun vs. knife fight (concerning cops that is, not thugs). Basically, it involved a test where the officer was to try and draw his weapon and get a successful shot on an attacker, who was armed with a knife, and coming at him from ~25' away. An alarming small percentage of officers could successfully draw their weapon and fire off a shot before being struck by the knife. Of those, even a smaller percentage actually hit the attacker. This can be argued both ways, I'm sure. Personally, I would definitely rather carry a gun for self defense.. but a good knife is sometimes all it takes to get out of a sticky situation.
It is truly better to avoid any kind of potentially hostile situation. Sometimes, however, the situation is unavoidable.

Perhaps the type of crime is different here in Europe.. from me and my friends' personal experiences, pulling out a knife will basically always escalate the situation to a worse one, where you are most likely to lose. There seems to be less petty crime here with scared kids running around trying to get a bit of cash, and more organised crime. Even though guns are illegal here, out of the times I have been mugged, about half were with a gun. One of my friends pulled a knife on a guy who told him to give him his money, and the mugger then pulled a gun.. and my friend said he was very very close to getting shot.
Another one of my friends pulled a knife against a guy with a knife and ended up a couple of weeks in hospital with about 9 stab wounds, and to this day he still can't do sports. A friend of a friend was stabbed to death because he pulled out his knife.. and I have yet to hear of anyone here carrying a knife and actually protecting themselves successfully with it.
Even if you live in a place where a lot of the crime is caused by scared kids, I still would not carry a knife "for protection". I would rather lose my money 10 times to guys who could have been scared off by a knife than lose my life to the one guy who wasn't scared.

Well what you decide to do largely depends on the guy you're dealing with. If it's this giant thug or gangster it's probably not a good idea to mess with them. On the other hand if it's some nervous looking punk you can scare them off most of the time if you pull your own weapon.
Another thing that you can do is just try your luck running from them and try to get to an open area with other people. This may or may not apply depending on the circumstances.
The best thing for self defense is simply to carry a gun or real taser around with you. Of course that might not be legal depending on where you live, but then again you shouldn't get caught anyway unless you do something to draw attention to yourself. Really this shouldn't even be necessary unless you live in a downright scary area.
Btw what's up with the crime where you live? I mean that's a lot of muggings and stabbings from your description.

I did see some footage though, where the police tasered a guy three times before he was downed.. he was HUGE and on a lot of drugs, and he just went on attacking them after the first two shots. However, most of the time a taser would be a great non lethal way to stop an attacker.
Sadly, in Denmark even something like pepper spray, which you can fairly easily make yourself, is illegal to even OWN. We also have crazy knife laws which they are trying to make even stricter so that you will go to jail the FIRST time you are caught carrying any knife, unless you can prove you are on your way to work a job where you need the knife, or going fishing/hunting. Even box cutters are illegal to carry!
I live pretty close to a prison and cemetery, and I used to live in Belgium where there was a lot of crime in the night life. I also often end up in random places at absurd times, which does not contribute to my safety. Apart from having my chest sliced slightly open which did suck a bit, I have never really been badly injured being mugged though. A couple of times I have been able to run or disable the attacker, but mostly it just ends up being a "shit I lost my phone and wallet" night.. which is why I always carry two wallets and two phones. One pair with almost no money and no working cards to give to the thief :beer:

Wow thats crazy. Where i am there' isn't a hole lot of mugging that goes on that is heard about. So as far as I can say it's a realitivly safe place. But there are times where shit happens. Since it's damn hard to get hold of a handgun in canada much less carry one around in public you mostly would be dealing with knives when in such a situation. So unless your dealing with a local gang you can probably pull the "That's not a knife, this is a knife" act, or you can just do some parkour like me
