Nah, if you knew the whole story you wouldn't be saying it's a joke. He's been acting like a dick for a while now, and it stems back to probably about January or so.

I'm a joker myself, but he's making things personal now.

Edit: Instead of turning this thread into a flame war, I did the better thing and I added him as well as a few others to my ignore list just now.

That was prob a VERY wise choice, this forum does NOT need another flame war!

Ive burned a couple of those fire starters before, the thing thats a block
of Mg with a long peice of flint glued to the side. After removing the flint
i would throw the block into the small fire pit we've got after the flames
have burned down and let the hot coals cook it. It will put out a BLINDING
amout of white light for a good while :D

A suggestion to be able to watch magnesium burning is to use a welder's mask... the dark green glass filter should permit you to see the combustion without any danger to your eyes. I also have a long roll of magnesium, a long time ago, I used to throw little bits of Mg strips in bromine... the ominous dark orange mushroom cloud was something you want to stay away from! ;)

Umm, why would you burn magnesium over a sink full of water? You realize that accelerates the reaction, right? :p

Yep that MFO realy isn't as bright a fellow as he thinks he is, if that burning Mg had fallen into the water there could have been a good size expolision.
This sort of ranks right up there with shining your Hi-Power laser at the Empire State building, know any thing about that MFO ?
O sorry you can't read this, You have me and several other people on ignore, acting like a ostrage with your head in the ground well then here this is for you :na: and this is for the people you have on your ignor list  BTW have you run into any walls latley :banghead:

The water always extinguished the process for me. Plus, in case anything else should happen to ignite.

please tell us all the rest of YOUR story as ALL want to know. and esp how I have been a dick, did I neg rep you or something or just step on your favorite bug, I think you are the one who has been leaving less than flattering messages in my home page, I don't do that to you so why have you done it to me you trying to get banned or something ?
you seem to be on self destruct mode, I think I'll just stand by and watch it happen :pop:
what did I say that made anything personal that isn't a matter of record ? please tell us all we want to know what you fell is so bad you needed to neg rep an outstanding member of this forum.
And speaking of membership just what do you contribuite, did you give anything to the auction how about monthly do you do that even ? do you help members to fix there problems or give technical advice on lasers that actuly help people or do you just tell em to f***off , krap can you even solder ?
get you head out of the hole and man up and answer these questions, no war here just the truth !

Will someone please convey this to the MFO as he can't see it, he's hiding from me...

@ mfo's -rep at me:

If you post something in public on a forum, you can't tell people to mind their own business. Take it to PM, no one else gives a shit what you think of other people. If you need to complain in public about someone, thats exactly what the dispute forum is for, not every single thread they happen to post in.

It may not always but water & magnesium can cause an explosion. See safety #4 It should be burned over a small pit with a bucket of sand nearby.
Always be aware mag bits can burn flesh like butter.

You're really a mad scientist aren't you?

I must give you credit for creativity though - the closest thing that compares was one chemistry student who liked to throw (tiny) bits of sodium in warm, concentrated sulfuric acid... because it made such 'nice and bright pops'.

/me is now inspired and goes looking for a bottle of bromine :D

Well it was a long time ago ad I had a bit of that stuff left from an old stock of lab supply I bought. I was even stupid enough to take a whiff of it... took me about half an hour before the burning sensation of bromine in your sinuses subsided...

Anyway, I'm glad it turned out ok because at the time, i showed off my experiments to my little sister (10 at the time). I would interest her in all matters of science, like astronomy, electronics and stuff like that. It fascinated her to no end, and in school, she excelled in chemistry and science. She's now 30, a pharmacist, and owns four drugstores. My task is accomplished! ;)

Robert

P.S.: Bromine is nearly impossible to find these days, or if available, at a king's ransom. It's one of those chemicals judged "unsafe" for home chemistry experiments... and I have to agree that this stuff is as nasty as fluorine gas and chlorine... bad mojo.

Mfo my science teacher in 6th grade did once. I always wanted to have those around just in case to blind people who, say, are about to rob you.
