Anybody into making music?

Do we have any djs here? I recently discovered spacesynth, it's an 80s style kind of music. Due to this discovery, I started experimenting with music software like Fl studio, cubase, I even got myself a keyboard midi controller ( m-audio oxygen 49 ), nice little keyboard for beginners Something for me to play with besides studying electrical engineering =)

I have zero knowledge regarding music theory. I'm learning really slow, but I learn. I want to be able to compose music like this someday.


So what do you guys use at your studio, those of you who make music? Totally irrelevant from lasers, but this is a big forum with many kinds of interests popping around so I thought I'd share my story and listen to yours

I would love to experiment with making electronic/club/trance/dubstep. But I may not have the patience for software that may be required.

I DJ Mostly like progressive electro, house, dubstep. I'll post some when it's not 3:30 in the morning... I also play the piano, that's my first instrument at least

I also use FL (assuming by FL you mean fruityloops lol), a bit of garageband, and Algoriddim's Djay for live stuff (My favorite)

Well I've tried uploading tracks to soundcloud to share them with you guys but every time I do it turns out distorted. I'm gonna see if I can just make a video and upload it to youtube to share

Hey Silvershot, I too have zero musical knowledge but mess around on with musical software to create electronic music. I have a M-Audio Axiom 49, Keystudio 49, and Key rig 49. Having a good knowledge of computers, I was able to get many musical software programs, find the right drivers, and make them work, and am able to make some nice electronic music. There are plenty of demo versions of great software out there for free, such as Arturia Modular Moog, mini moog, analogue factory and the list goes on. They have dozens of pre programmed sequencer patterns, and a like to play cords on top of them. Some other good companies of computer software are G-force and Native Instruments. Google them. My favorite program which I did purchase is G Force Mtron pro, which is a mellotron emulator. Classic strings, choirs , and all of the other great sounds from groups like Genesis, King Crimson, Moody Blues, etc. I do use Ableton 7 Live software sometimes and Fruity Loops, but using an iRig adaptor, I am able to record from computer directly onto my Ipad using garage band. in 8 tracks, And then I can add tracks onto my songs anywhere, plus use the loops from garage band. The possiblilites are endless. I like this better than Ableton Live, though that is better, just more work at least for me Attached are a few pics of my set up. Again I have no musical training, but with technology, I am able to create electronic music that sounds good to me.

That's my rule. Every artist who listens to your music might point out that it's "wrong" in some parts or it misses something which in their eyes sounds about right. I want to be able to create music the way I like, as simple as it might sound, it's still something that can fulfill your passion to compose music and call yourself aν amateur composer. That's all I want. I want to be part of this wave called spacesynth, because it's 80's, because it's what my ear likes at the moment. I have found the sampkles, VSTs and along with my midi keyboard, I can come up with melodies which I can then fix on a software.

I totally agree. I just do this to satisfy myself. I also have been in photography since 1975 when I gor my first SLR Miolta camera. I heven taken tens of thousands of photographs, About seven years agp I joined a photo club, where the point was to evaluate, grade and be critical of evetyones photos. I realized it took all of the fun out of shooting because instead of composing the picture I wanted to take, I started thinking bout how to please others when I shot instead of going with my first instincts. I quit the club about six months later. I now have the passion again about photographing.

Interesting stuff!! I wish I had a musical brain.
My wife is a master of the Piano and the Violin. I don't understand how to read music.

Yet, I am an audiophile and love high quality HIFI. Got tired of .mp3 and wanted fidelity.

Go figure.....
