Well.... it seems my memory is not as it used to be....

I did a quick Google search and found this experiment...
(about Piezo spark distances)

http://www.sciencebuddies.org/science-fair-projects/project_ideas/Elec_p032.shtml

It seems that the Free Air electrical spark jump spec is 3000V/mm
that is 76,200 volts per inch... which would allow 1.7MV to jump
about 22 inches.. which would be much easier to insulate for...

I ordered samples of these and will check them with our High Voltage
Probe when they get here.

I replaced the LED in my stun gun with an emitter from an MXDL. It's like 10 times brighter, but it ate up the battery in just a few minutes lol. It's a win-fail situation.
wow the battery is really that bad? We should take ours apart and see what kind of battery it takes..
It surprises me that a MXDL LED drains the battery faster than DEATH electricity

It has a small battery pack inside which contains 3 small batteries that are roughly 2/3 the size of a AAA battery. It says 250mAh right on the battery pack. It IS strange that it can produce millions of volts using nearly no power at all lol.

Nice stun gun. I might buy one now. No way that's 1.7 millions volts though. I have a 60KV DC power supply that can arc 3 inches. That looks like 30KV max.

If you managed to modify a stun gun to discharge a bunch of amps you'd probably stop your victim's heart!

The current just passes from one electrode to the other and never through the heart though.

Quite a debacle we have here. As according to what lasersbee found, it's only capable of 1 inch per 76,200 volts. Your guess about mine would be quite accurate as it can jump about half an inch putting it at about 35KV. However yours, it is either far more than 60KV OR electricity works far differently than we could ever imagine!

Well it depends a lot on the breakout points. If you have 2 sharp points then the electricity will arc a considerably longer distance. If you have 2 big spheres or other rounded objects then it really won't want to arc. Also it depends on the frequency of the electricity and the humidity of the air. At high frequency you get the 'skin effect' where the electricity tries to travel along the outer edges of an object. That's one of the reasons why tesla coils are capable of massive discharges into open air. At high freq the electricity can't wait to jump from the object.

If these voltages seem unreasonable then I dont know why every website out there that sells stun guns have such high numbers?

Also, on youtube videos, you can see how people react when stunned. If the voltage is claimed to be in the hundred thousands it usually hurts them pretty bad, but if it's claimed to be in the millions it REAAAAALY hurts them. Just what I've noticed.

Maybe because they can rake in more money by advertising as higher powered?

well, after the epic adventure today, I got my stun gun. I havn't stunned myself yet, or used it on anything or anyone. I hope to use it some time soon!

me and my friends stunned eachother in his car today. The longest I could hold it for was about a second, which is unbearable. I did manage to hold it for a second and a half once, but that one hurt lol.

btw here is a video of it discharging into the air.
Just recorded it from my phone:

I bought one years ago and treated it like weapon that would knock a person to the ground. For $20 it feels like a bee sting, it's annoying but nothing I'd defend myself with. A fist would be a better choice. Makes a nice zappy noise might scare someone off, but it's it's not 1.5kV that is for certain!

The real police grade stunguns run over $500 used and more for a new one I believe. Those are supposed to disable a person for a minute. I could never get that ex to test her's on me. I was curious if a real stungun would knock me to ground at 200lbs 6ft.

TBH, I wouldn't trust these "stun guns" in a self defense situation. Most generic off-the-shelf stun guns are no more than over-glorified arc generators. They are not designed/intended to drop you in one(or a few hits).I've been hit by both and I can vouch for the effectiveness of a real stun gun. You may end up pissing off the perp instead of stopping them...

I don't trust stun guns at all really. I've seen even the "real" stun guns fail plenty of times. A simple knife or even your fists would be better IMO.
