Hmm, that would be fine, but looking here:
http://dkc3.digikey.com/PDF/T073/P2298.pdf
top-right it looks like it's not compatible with the common cathode layout of the laser here:
http://www.fineartradiography.com/hobbies/lasers/blu-ray/index.html

Is there a mistake?

There is a whole thread about using this driver for blurays. Try this post.

With the testing that I have done already... I can report as follows...

1. The controller is GO!
2. I noticed a rather quick ramp up in power when starting the diode.
3. IT IS SMALL!!! AND HARD TO SOLDER TO... :(
4. The little pot on there is extremely sensitive...
5. Very nice control and doesn't heat up as much as I suspected.
6. I have ramped it up to 160mA, didn't need to go any further, and as such that is where I stopped. It seems to warm up at such high drive power though... :-/
7. I like it, and trust it with driving a BluRay diode, and that is what I got it for ;) :D

I saw that thread and noticed this post:
Ok, tested it on a BluRay diode... This is pretty much useless! IT powers the diode up to about 10mW and then stops... I managed to get it up to 18.5mW MAX, after which it did the exact same thing Sad

Bummer;
DDL

but he didn't say anything much after that. to me, 10mW-18.5mW is very useful, so hopefully he will clarify. Also, SenKat never said anything about it in that thread. Hopefully he will chime in, too.

Here is SenKat's chime : I don't care for that driver, as a 7805 Voltage regulator works perfectly for this application - and they are a LOT less expensive - with regulated output, and a current limiting resistor, you will be good to go ! :)
[ /end chime ] hehehehe

thanks, Sen. A regulator like you describe will be included in the group buy driver kit (if selected) It should be more robust, and it's cheaper than the digikey one, too.

Re: Group Buy #2 Violet laser modules $27 target

Perhaps a little caution here. I think I've seen posts of using the 7805 with a 1 ohm resistor. That resistor may be a little low.
My Blu runs at 50 mA with a junction voltage of 4.86 volts. My math indicates a need for a 2.8 ohm series resistor.

Re: Group Buy #2 Violet laser modules $27 target

I will be using a 78L05A. This is the 100ma TO-92 case version and it has a 1.7 volt drop out voltage. I was going to use it as a current regulator, but Daedal confirmed my testing of it as a current regulator and it is a no go. But it works very well as a voltage regulator.

You can get them here for 10 cents a piece and he has many other parts for cheap:

I also ordered some 50 ohm precision trim pots from him for 99 cents a piece!

That info is all over this forum. Also, go to google and type in LM 317.
Use a search here.

The LM317 circuit will have slow-start capacitor, current regulator with to-220 package, heat sink, two current ranges for adjustment: current adjustable from 20-80mA for this diode, to about 500mA for other diodes. With an included resistor change the current range can be changed. Will come with a protoboard, resistors, pot, and instructions.

Re: Group Buy #2 Violet laser modules $27 target

Can you please post a picture of what the lens kit contains? I might want one for other laser diodes too. Thanks.

we are quickly approaching the 22 paid-for mark, so they will be ordered early next week.
