Hmmm...I just extracted the diode from my sled and it appears to be windowless. :-? I know for a fact I didn't smash the window, I removed the diode in its heatsink very carefully and I didn't see any little glass shards on my table either. I haven't really kept up on IgorT's windowless PHR-803T diode thread but from skimming over it a little I think that this is a good thing that I got a windowless diode.

yup mine have been windowless too. You see, My supplier had PHR-803T's from 2 different manufacturers. One was the whole assembly with the huge rails/motors/etc, one was just the Sled, in a box. I got the sled-in-a-box ;D . Turns out these push a little farther, and they are all windowless...


anyhow, just killed another one. :'( :'( it was going strong at 160mW, and so I swapped out my 20mW in my Jayrob build with the 160mW one. It was beautiful. Then That d a m n ol' little voice came back, and I decided to push it more!! *dead*

*cries* :'( *cries*

that leaves 1 more for me (out of the 5 that I had). I REALLY REALLY gotta stop pushing these...

Man I don't have enough guts to push these things, I haven't killed one of these yet and I sure don't want to in the future. The max I've pushed one of these things is 101mA. I'm still debating what I should go with next, 125mA sounds good but I may go a little farther depending on what people report.

mine always die at 180mA. I have stabily pushed one to 140, (bout 190mW) then to 180 (which was 230mW and then dead)


the other ones are good at around 120, then they get a little weird at around 140, then they die after that.

Let me make sure I am reading this right.

With 140mA input from the driver, you were getting 190mW out of the diode

With 180mA input from the driver, you were getting 230mW out of the diode

Am I reading that correctly?

yup, that was a SPECIAL diode. the other ones usually aren't as efficient when you start to go high, that one was marvelous. Too bad my DMM died after that. I dont have anymore 9v batteries, and I got 30second bursts of DMM here and there form the little juice left in my 9v's that I had lying around.

the rest of these die after 160mW.

I run them at up to 190mA, but the output (after Merideth glass lens) is 180mW. I have one here that has been running at 190mA for several weeks. When I first set it up, I ran it for 1-2 minutes at a time, ten times a day. It is still shining. I play with it outside about every other night. I've sold several that are being driven at 170-180mA. They put out about 140-150mW. They are still going. I don't understand your outputs or the deaths of the diodes at these inputs. I know I'm not magic ;)

How are you measuring your input current? How are you measuring your output mW?

as I said, that one diode was VEEERY special. I have never reached anywhere near 200mW after that. The rest of mine end up like yours.

Greetings from Australia. Received mine yesterday. Now, this is my first attempt playing around with Blu-ray diodes. What kind of voltage should I run them on? Tried 5V and I can only push them as far as 90mA and got 60mW out of it. Does this sounds normal? What voltage do you guys run yours at? Thanks mate for everything.

5V is NOT enough. You have to power the driver as well as the diode.

What driver are you using?

yea 5v is too little. the diode needs 4v, and the driver must have some power requirement, if you are using rckstr's then you need 6.5v minimum.

I wouldn't try to run one of these with less than 5V available to the diode.

I'm actually running the diode using my home made (modified Die4Drive) current adjustable power supply capable of supplying between 4mA ~ 5A. This PSU has a very low voltage drop as far as I can see. Input is from PC PSU which is around 5.2V and my home made PSU is giving out 5V on the output side. I have double checked this by measuring the voltage across the diode when it's running and it is reading 5.05V. I have turned the current dial to the max and it's only running at 85mA ~ 95mA depending on diode temp. Out of curiosity I tried feeding this diode with 6.3V and it was drawing ~160mA-ish without the current even being limited. Power output is only recorded at ~100mW though at this current level and this is after passing Meredith acrylic lens. I've also tried to power the diode directly from an 18650 Li-Ion battery and it was only sucking up ~35mA at 4.2V! This diode must have a really high resistance compared to any other diodes. All 3 diodes that I have tested so far behave like this. I have a feeling this diode is a voltage hungry bastard :eek:. That's why I'm wondering what are the voltage across the diode on everyone else setup. Thanks guys for your input so far.

amkdeath & daguin: Based on what you guys achieved, I must be doing something wrong here :-/. Or maybe my Die4Thing thermopile sensor is not reading 405nm accurately :-?.

IgorT has done the voltage work. Maybe he'll pitch into the discussion here. Do you have a glass lens you can swap out for the acrylic, or can you get close enough to your thermopile to measure it without optics? I know the "beam" spreads pretty fast with these diodes without collimating. The acrylic cuts down on the output. At 160mA you should be getting more out of it [highlight]IF [/highlight]it has enough voltage available. Over 140mA it NEEDS closer to 6V available (after driver). I run my hand-held, high-powered blu-rays with 11V now (using the Rkcstr driver). I tried running them with 7.2-8V (2, 10440's), but the output was very low. Try it with at least 6V available after the driver.

I don't know anything about the Die4Thing meter.

Yes, I run mine in the MXDL build with 3 10440's, so bout 10 volts. Try feeding the diode with more volts, and see what happens.

Oh, and did I read correctly, you hooked onea these up DIRECTLY to a 18650? =O
