Still wondering about the status of my 589 and 532... Best thing would be to shoot Glenn a PM?

Yeah. And on a side note i've decided not to RMA my 589. After using it a while (gone through two batteries so far.. They only last about half an hour at the most in mine) it's gotten more stable, and i've decided I can just live with the sticky switch.

Yeah jedirock - send him a PM and use the email link too if you want. He's been more responsive the last few days. I'm waiting for a 532, too.

Got a reply (or two) from Glenn, not looking good for my lasers. The 50mW 589 was DOA, and he says that the 400mW 532 is somewhat underspec. I didn't actually ask him how much, but he's going to get both returned to CNI. So the waiting continues for me...

Bad news on my 532 5mW pen too...starts at 2mW then quickly dropps to 1mW and holds there for 30-45 seconds. Then it "warms up" and jumps to 3mW...PM'd Glenn to see if anything can be done...

I know this isn't typical of CNI but I am not impressed by their products on this GB...too many issues!

I hope they make it right for us all...

I'll be sending a few lasers back to CNI in just a couple of days, so if any of you want to return one please just get it back to me ASAP. If all is well, then Great! Also, if you want something from CNI they are going to ship to me quite soon, hopefully about end of January, so let me know and we can likely add some on the shipment. Thanks! -Glenn

iFoSh, are you getting yours taken care of?

I know Glenn said he wanted to close this phase of final CNI stuff down by Wednesday... I've got 3 lasers coming, and I know there were some possible RMAs...

Glenn sent me a replacement he had already and I get it tomorrow. He has taken care of everything for me and I really appreciate it. I'm sending him the defective one once I get the new one. Thanks again Glenn!!

CNI is working to get us the rest of the replacement lasers, (I sent in the order a couple of days back... and they s/b shipped quite soon.) & I'll be starting another CNI GB , Thanks all! -Glenn

Thanks Glenn... I know I said this in the email but, do you think you could push CNI a bit on 488nm/490nm The DPSS setup for this now really us kind of a known quantity, and similar to 561nm which I KNOW they can do.

(From what I understand, what CNI does is 980nm diode into Nd:YAg, which actually is why their "488nm-class" lasers are 490nm ..... Good enough for me)

I know they can do it.

Hey aryntha, Yes I am sure the can do, and I sure would like a 490nm myself! :) I bet it would help if we could order several... anyone interested? -Glenn

Yes, it can be done, but not in the way you're referring to.

The Nd:YAG is a separate laser resonator, the pump wavelength does not affect the output wavelength. Nd:YAG has absorption bands at 780~ and 808nm, regardless of which is used to pump it the output will always be 1064nm, unless different cavity optics are used.

Nd:YAG doesn't even have an absorption band at 980nm: http://www.optoiq.com/etc/medialib/...Par.13920.File.dat/vloc_yag_tech_brochure.pdf

I'm assuming you know how DPSS works here.

The two most likely scenarios here are:

a. They're using a VESCEL (like your Protera), which is unlikely
b. They've found a gain medium that lases at 980nm, which is more likely.

Bear in mind the first option, while being easier, would also be extremely complicated and require a lot of work to get set up in a handheld unit.

The second option is probably easier, and would be the better option in this case.

Either way, don't expect stability and lots of power, or a low price for that matter. The mere fact they can get a 491nm resonator into a handheld host should be considered a miracle in itself.

The lab unit they offer is 1-2mW rated, and that's in their larger H host. This is the host they use for <1W green portables and anything else requiring heatsinking and stability. The 480nm unit looks a little better, but it still may be a stretch to get one in a portable.

Glenn, may want to ask about both 480 and 491. Those are the colors in that range they do.

Really, i'd go for either.....

hm, well I know they can do 480 and 491; -- I know that SpectraPhysics' Cyan uses 976->488 (doesn't it?) So we'd have to be talking directly doubled then, is that what you're getting at? With a 980 input and a 490 output...
