Ya know, after playing with it some, that "1mw" laser I bought in this GB seems to just have a very slow startup. after 5-10 seconds of use, or if it's already warm somehow or another, it brightens up to what appears to be about 10mw, it's just not very stable. Sweet. :D

How's it stack up to your 5mw greens? I ask because I bought mine as an Aquarius "5" also, and in the last group buy, several of us got really hooked up with the engraved ones. Just curious. :)

Re: GB & Clean Sale Closed, DO it Again?

i finally got some batteries today but was surprised at how aweful the divergence is for this laser. it focuses about 4-6ft away and only burns in that area. for a near 1watt laser i would expect way more. by 20ft the "beam" puts out a square dot about 10mm around. all in all i would say im not satisfied with this laser even for the over half off price i got on it. i would rather have paid full price for an in-spec unit and if it did no better than this id never give LG any money again. i havent received my lpm yet so i cant test the output yet but with a divergence like this its very diappointing. weird b/c output doesnt really matter b/c the laser isnt focused anywhere except for 4-6ft away and still has a "square" dot so you have to sit it down(not moving AT ALL) for it to burn ANYTHING. glenn i understand this isnt your fault and am not holding you responsible in the least. i understand this was done by LG and all you did was package and ship the laser. i would like to get an exchange for the other unit they had if justin is willing to but please let him know of my unsatisfaction with this unit.

EDIT: i also forgot to mention that the keyswitch seems a little messed up/finicky at times. if you barely touch it it turns the laser off.

the pic attached is the "dot" at ~30ft. its a square of 20+mm on each side. if i was using this for ir targeting id end up literally "painting" the side of a barn at 100yds with these beam specs.

It's worth pointing out that ALL of these high powered IR lasers have terrible divergence, 3-5 mRad or worse. That thing having a focal distance of six feet sounds much better than most IR laser's I've heard of. These things were built to burn stuff, plain and simple. That's good, because with a multimode diode assembly that they have, you're not gonna get anything for divergence short of an optics set as expensive as your hardware.

the only way it burns is to leave it absolutely still. my diy red at ~250mw burns better than this, this just burns at greater distances(when it wants to). so lets recap here...400$ for a laser that has to be perfectly still to burn anything or a diy red that burns like mad just not a longer distances. i could have spent the less than 100$ on a red and been more satisfied than i was with the ir laser. from what you said that also means to get any kind of good beam specs id also have to spend another 400-500$ on a set of good optics just to make this thing worth anything. the diy red is sounding better all the time....

. . . and they're prettier too.

Re: GB & Clean Sale Closed, DO it Again?

Drew, If you are interested in burning, or even using it for a DPSS experiment laser, you may want to watch for a surplus sale IR beam expander, Check out Surplusshead.com, or ZnSe lens.  The IR lasers are mostly interesting to me as a source for 808 for experiments, like others have said, for distance burning a red low divergence diode is a lot better.  I'll contact Justin to see if he'll trade for the other one, as the switch defect was not mentioned or known.

Re: GB & Clean Sale Closed, DO it Again?

Just got my two Lyras. The Lyra C5 is a very nice looking laser pointer and worked right out of the box, with a beautiful ~4mW green dot with none of the awful specks and reflections you see in cheaper pointers. This will definitely be my primary green presentation pointer from now on since I took apart my Newwish 5mW pointer. Unlike the Newwish--"true" or not--this has real IR filtering as well; not a big deal for 5mW, but at least I'm getting all green. The only "defect" on this one is that it came with dead batteries, haha! $30 too, what a steal.

The Lyra F is a slightly more powerful 6mW green laser with a focusing head. The laser module pops out because it is missing the button, but otherwise the whole thing works just fine. You can tell there's slightly more power out of this one. Now the task remains to carve out a new button of some sort that I can use, which shouldn't be too hard.

I'm really impressed by how nice these laser pointers look. They're all polished up, with no dings, scratches, and even the tested power output from Scopeguy. I'm looking forward to future clearance sales.

Thanks a lot Glenn!

I really wish I was in the last one.. I saw the engraved case, looks a lot nicer than the one I got.. but I'm still very happy with the purchase! Other than the incredible price break, the laser was tested at ~6.32mw, so a little more powerful than expected.. never a bad thing..

I'm fairly new to lasers.. but I'm not able to tell a big difference in brightness between my 5mw greenie (true) from dx and the blue one.. the beam is definitely cleaner than the dx greenie though..

Well the DX ones are probably over-spec anyway, so they might be 6mW or something. I doubt they have much control on it.

Re: GB & Clean Sale Closed, DO it Again?

I got my case today which was a suprize since I didn't know it was sent out yet. I see what Glenn meant by losing some money on the cases. The case is very nice. I think it will be the new home for my RPL and Oceanus.
