I would personally think that permission from Dr. Lava should be obtained, not from BF.
Sounds like the circuit came from Lava, the board from Blue? so it's split.. but the important part is the circuit - someone could design a new board.

But why not just do a kit version of the newest LavaDrive? maybe a bit larger, using a slightly larger chip to make soldering easier.

Or... maybe the difference in cost (to you, Ken) is negligible between kits and finished... then if you add in the extra "support" people will demand on the kits, maybe in balance the kits are not economic (at least time-wise) for you? Notice how many people on LPF now that are asking questions without reading the background in posts... those are going to be your kit customers... or at least they will be the ones you'll hear from after-sale. I don't think under these circumstances I would do kits...

I could have sworn (of course I am most likely wrong) that Kenom and BF were partnered in this venture - and if that is the case, joint ownership of hte intellectual property exists - just getting technical, and throwing out multi-syllable words :) Oh, and HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO ALL YOU MOTHERS OUT THERE ! :D

Re: Laser Barrels V2. GB. Second run.

I don't want to take responsibility for assembled drivers that don't work.  I will provide kits that are easy to assemble following the given steps.  then from there assembly is your problem not mine.  The components alone for the lava kit are upwards of $12 just for the parts.  that's not including pcb boards or assembly.  Hence the reason lava's drivers are $20.

There is no doubt that I could redesign the original schematic posted by dr. lava in a different form very similair to blue's.  I've considered it even being pre-assembled as an option.  However doing so bumps up the cost to over $12 per board.  Now I've planned for somewhere in the vascinity of $6 for board and components and folks assemble themselves.  I've made these by myself and it's not difficult at all.  a total of 8 components.  My idea was to not have to stock lots of electrical components for replacement of dead drivers.  Eh.  I don't see a way around it I suppose.  If we do pre-assembled drivers it will bump up the cost another $6

As it sits now, with the financier taking a small cut of my meager profits to get this run done now, that doesn't leave me with any playing room so that cost needs to be passed on to the customer. I think that $50 is high enough for these barrels. I can't see increasing the cost much.

I don't know. I'm just rambling. Let me hear your thoughts.

OK I ordered another barrel with lava driver

Question:

On the first two i ordered it did not offer an option to specify the ma range, this one I had to. Are you contacting us regarding the ones purchased before that option was up?

Yes. Lava added the option in the checkout as it's important for his driver. I will be emailing everyone with previous payments to include the current range.

Pocketfluff - I have all of BF's driver bits right now in my possession.  I will be distributing them out per his old GB thread, and the original barrel GB as well.

Am I reading this right? It sounds like blue sent you the drivers for the original laser barrel gb and you're going to send them to us, and that would mean kenom could send me my barrel and I could assemble my first ever bluray?!???

;D

Oh, BTW, Kenom, just double checking that I'm on the list for one of the 2nd run barrels as well as the first. I didn't see myself on the list on the front page, so I figured I'd ask...

I did sell a couple 'kit' versions of the newest flexdrive, and so far haven't heard a single person being successful in assembly. Not that it hasn't happened, I just haven't heard! :) The chips unfortunately aren't available in a larger size. This is why the kits will be a traditional linear regulator style.

I've added the option to add 18650's to your order as well as battery charger for it as well. The battery charger is a universal kind http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4151

Batteries are these.
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5776 I'm breaking up the packs into individual batteries so those that only need 1 can get just 1.

Excellent choice of batteries.

I've had several Trustfire 18650's for a while now. They are a different model (sku #5790), but they're similar - the #5790 is protected but has no short-circuit protection. Since I don't plan on doing that, no problem, but at this time I would buy the #5776.

The only question I have about mine is only a rhetorical one: how many charge cycles will they go through? The reason I can't answer that is because they last so dang long I rarely need to charge them!

He wasn't lying when he said the lavadrives were hard to solder. I had mine working for a few minutes until I got picky and tried to re-adjust some things... and I broke it. ;D It took me about 2 hours to assemble the thing, too.

Gotcha... well, that's the way it is with technology, eh? When chips the size of a grain of rice become the only thing available, it will be very hard if not impossible for most people to make something from a kit...

slightly off topic in this off-topic discussion: Anyone who is getting older and intends to keep on making things- if you find a bargain on a "dissecting microscope", consider buying it! I've found mine invaluable for circuit-building as well as many other small-item projects (including splinter removal)(and its original intent, wildflower i.d.)

Re: Laser Barrels V2. GB. Second run.

Kenom,
I tried to order 2 batteries + 1 charger and picked the "combined shipping with another order" option, which I figured is how we would add it to our order. But when I do that Google only wants to charge me $3 instead of the $17 it should be.

Also for my lavadrives, I'd like one to be the 32-150ma range and the other to be the 100-500 ma range (I ordered before we could specify)
