I will do my best to work everything out to everyone's satisfaction - I regret EVER getting involved in this group buy since it has been such a drain on everyone's patience, and of course - my wallet :p But - I am a man of my word, and will see this through for each of you !

Just a quick note for everyone: I didn't take it to email because I was pissed at Senkat or anything, it was mainly to keep a few uncertainties out of the public eye for the moment. We are working out a plan on how to handle this.

Greg, you are doing an excellent job at taking care of all of this mess and you are doing a super job at making sure everyone is happy. Thank you very much for all that you continue to provide. I got my laser and I tried it out briefly and it was amazing. The beam is nice and solid, the power was stable (thermally measured for a full minute), the divergence was nice and uniform and the pointer itself was encased and packaged nicely.

Unfortunately I do too have the same problem with the spot having a nice line across it, but I know what this is from and this is not a problem. This is simply from the collimating optic + diode... not from malfunctioning or anything. Some of my other DIY projects do the same thing... if anyone knows a better way of explaining it please do, but I think it's because the collimating optic is a 'magnifying' lens? the edges simply diverge to a line rather than a dot... makes sense? ::) I'm no optics engineer... but that was my rough guess when I first saw it.

My pointer came with the same paint peel effect that tacomanmcjab had experienced and I think it's just a matter of the materials being used. Considering the bargain we got on these babies... I'm a VERY happy camper right now! ;D

Thank you Greg;

From what i've heard, the line is due to the fact that the actual diode itself emits a rectangular beam, and without extremely precise and expensive optics this line appears when trying to convert that rectangle into a dot.

these should be single mode reds that are point emitters, so they shouldn't be much of a line. I have a nice whole round beam, it does have a bit of a halo around it, but it's nice and round.

Here's a comparison of the GB red vs a rpl. You cans ee the Halo I speak of on the couch.

This is close to what it looks like to the eye, cept as usualy the beam isn't solid. This is a 10sec exposure.

I have had lines in single mode diodes, and have one in my open can diode, but it doesn't effect performance as far as I can tell.

My SenTorch has a nice round dot too, and a slight halo like yours. I didn't even notice the halo until you mentioned it. Maybe it is just some kind of film on the lens and can be cleaned off.

Got mine yesterday and then I could not find my batteries.
I had to run to radio shack and pay $9.50 each for 2 batteries.
I must say that I am very happy with it.
Popped balloons across the room with ease.

I was thinking about the guy that has the one that went dim.
That sounds like the glowtorch I got on fleabay. It was a bid dimmer than the cheapo keychain lasers.
I do not know what was wrong with it senkat currently has it and is going to try and "make it better than it was before, better, stronger, brighter"
maybe when he finds what was wrong with mine it may be easier to repair yours than to send it back.

ouch I bought 24 panasonic cr123 batteries for 18...

Also I do notice that there is a faint line along the dot it's kinda like -o- I've checked the lense and it's clean. It almost looks like there's some contamination or something on the lense, it's that kind of line.

it's very faint I can't tell it's there hardly at all unless I mask the output like with my finger ot along the edge of a door or something. If I get time I'll stick this into the beam analyzer at work and see what it shows. It's too birght to see by eye.

update.. no line around the dot this morning.

I think it's caused by condensation inside the unit. looks like that kind of smear/line you get witha dirty lense when it does it.

Most high powered red diodes will have this line, it is nothing to do with the lens, it is simply an artifact on high powered diodes due to the shape of the emitter. It is not actually a singe point, although the bulk of the lasing (99.9%) comes from a single point , the emitter zone is actually a very thin line.

I actually proved this before with a series of pictures looking into the optic cavity of a LD right on the lasing threshold, they are somewhere on LC, I will try and retrieve them for you. I was using a simple 5mw diode connected to my precision Power supply and took a series of pictures right at the lasing threshold, increasing the Voltage by 1mv at a time. The camera is actually pointing INTO the diode window, so you can see what is happening at the emitter

Ok just found them. you will see the emitter is actually a line, with the main lasing point appearing as the voltage is increased.
