Hey all you guys who have connections to the retailers of the sleds that go in the HD-DVD drives.....

Why dont we start looking into trying to buy just the sled from the 6x drives? I'm sure we could buy the sled alone for less than the whole drive, if we could find someone that would sell to us.

I can dig through my pile of laser junk and get the sled number.

what do you guys think?

I honestly don't think we will be able to get the sleds much cheaper than the burners, but I guess the only way to see if that's true is to contact a company that sells them.

As I understand it the market for hd-dvd sleds exists because of its status as a console peripheral. That is, something of standard specification and widespread use. It also means it is something that is more likely to be taken for repair when it breaks rather than just thrown out.
A 6x bluray burner is a different class of device and I would be suprised if a market for replacement parts existed.
Still, I don't think anyone will fault you for looking, or not be happy if you found such a source.

I thought about this as well...

What I was also thinking, though, it that I doubt LG manufactures the sled themselves. Now, if we could find the manufacturer that sells to LG that would be one step, but getting them to sell to someone OTHER than LG would be the hard part.

I'll look into this and see what I can dig up.

If anyone else can help that would be awesome!

I looked into this a long time ago, and the price you pay, even at 100 units is more than the cost of the assembled drive on the computer market.

I had a feeling this was going to be the case.

I'll dig up the model number just in case though!

this could be interesting... a 6x GB.

i'd buy one :)

edit: i posted this to let others know if a 6x GB ever was to occur, there would be interest.
this is not spam IMO. and the thread was a couple weeks old yes. if i wanted to spam old threads I'd go back 20 pages deep and post crap in all of them, just like jinpenglaser did like clockwork.

... wait for it....

i feel some more insults coming.

have a good weekend,

old thread is old...

Sk8'r LOVES to resurrect old/dead threads.... like he has nothing better to do. There is a REASON most threads are old - the avenues have been investigated, the topic is no longer of any use, or there is no interest in the topic anymore. Regardless of that, to drive up post counts with spammy crap, I guess it's a good idea, huh ? ::)

You know, I really do not think that his post was spam. It was relevant, and the thread wasn't THAT old. Pwnstar's post imo is more spam like.
