Re: GGW-H20L 6x Sled GB!!! THE EPIC GB THREAD LAWL

Looks identical to the 4X in my hand - except the numbers on that first sticker are different. Mine is:
8A21
A007
1040

Like Dave, I can't read the numbers in that 2nd photo, but it sure looks like a 4x.

EDIT: but in spite of Igor's testing and negative reviews ;-), I really like the 4x sleds - so if you get quoted a competitive price, imo you still have a great find. anything less than $20 would make me stretch my credit card somewhat!
(I was going to say $40 but in case they're monitoring here...) ;D

I'm about ready for a refund. I need these parts, or other parts, to complete my project. I'm not doing a paypal complaint or anything like that, just stating where i am at.

We haven't heard from AMK in a while - I'm guessing he's away for a few days, maybe he'll be back on Monday. We should sit tight until then, let's see what he's got to say.

Looks like a 4x to me, maybe someone who still has them (IgorT?) could confirm.

Unfortunatelly, due to our customs, i never got to see one of these sleds up close in person. I only ever get diodes..

But i got the same photos today. Supplier said they are not sure what it is.

I compared them carefully with the old 4x photo. Look here... Except for the numbers on the label, it's the same. There is some metal missing at the very top.

the one constant on that sticker is the "21" in the top number...
Igor, do you know what is on the sticker on the other side of the sled you have a photo of?
Mine is 8A27 2241 A201

Well, Dan, i have not yet posted any conclusions, except for them being inconsistent, which is a simple observation.
I have more of them ordered in another GB too.

But i was talking to a friend last night, and we were wondering, how these diodes can write disks at 4x speed... Then i started thinking about the possibility, that the PHRs we are buying are QC rejects. What if it's the same with these?

With most, the problem could be something else in the sled, but with some, it could simply be the diode being too weak. Altho i would expect they would test that up front, or rather that the diode manufacturer would weed out the ones that don't fall in a certain range.

If these are all good diodes, their CW power rating could be guesstimated, by the max power they can all reach consistently, below the kink. That's why i said they could be 80mW diodes.

I hope to soon find the time to plot my 6x, to have something to compare them to. I have to keep reminding myself not to use it, so as not to risk killing it before the plot.

I tried to enhance the photo of the other side, but i realised the text is too pixelated. There is nothing to enhance there.. Just a blur of pixels, that could be anything.

I can ask.. But it doesn't really matter, it's a 4x.. It's missing a big chunk of metal.

I hope you know I didn't mean to disparage your testing, or your judgements (or lack thereof). :-/ :p

just opining that my impressions are a bit more Rosie, and you know where that's from ;-)

RE: QC rejects: I think not, because the sleds I received are individually packaged and boxed. If rejects, they would not bother with packaging and I expect we'd be getting them in bins all jumbled up and not individually wrapped.

Re: GGW-H20L 6x Sled GB!!! THE EPIC GB THREAD LAWL

Keep in mind, i never get to see the sleds. Except for 6 PHR sleds, everything else was just diodes.. I never considered the PHRs being rejects...

Otherwise, buy a larger number of 4x's, and allow statistics to take over. When i buy a small number, i get good or even good+very good diodes. When i buy a larger number of sleds, statistics takes over, and i get an evenly spread mixture of all efficiencies..

Do you think i could trick statistics, if i made a larger number of smaller orders? ;)

Look guys... I found some confirmed 6x sleds... a bit more expensive though

:D :D :D ;)
Yea, I spent a couple hours searching the web yesterday, same results. NOBODY is selling repair 6X parts yet that I could find, even on ebay. Please, anyone, prove me wrong!

But there is a guy selling what seems to be a daguin 6x build on this thread - best deal I have seen yet if it IS a 6X - very tempting..

When I worked at a famous electronics firm in Wilsonville Oregon many years ago, we used to call this "Reliability Prediction" ;)

That is simply one of the "exceptional" PHR diodes.  I burn up alott of diodes to find the occasional one that will burn so brightly.

Peace,
dave

Ahh, thanks for the clarification. :)

That looks like a Merideth glass lens on there, which would explain a lot, also. Certainly many of these PHRs can put out over 200mW, at least for a few hours. I used the only Merideth GL I had with a .5W pump diode out of a DX pointer to make a burner, or I might have tried this myself. But now I'm just waiting for Igor's lenses to become available... ;)

Yes. It is a Merideth module with the glass lens. That one was my personal laser for some time, until I "moved up" in experimental output. I sold it to a man who subsequently sold it to the current owner. I am tempted to buy it just to bring it home again. ;)

Peace,
dave
