I don't know if anyone even cares anymore, but...


My test 4x has by now survived over 112 hours!
Today it is doing anywhere between 140-151mW. It's dropping in and out of the kink, so the power goes up and down with temperature, meaning it degraded enough to roll down it's own slope and fall into a kink...

And......

My one and only 6x is dying, cos i set it higher in order to find out what the "6x" diodes from this GB would be safe to set to....  :'(


210mW (through a plastic lens =  >260mW raw output) is NOT a safe long term power even for a 6x diode. Not if you actually use it. I'm sure a 6x would survive 200mA longer than any PHR would survive 150mA, but it's not actually a stable power. But then again, that only makes sense, if you consider the raw output at 200mA.... Even at 198mA it degraded...

We are expecting way too much from these diodes, resulting in lasers with a life in tens of hours at best.. I don't even remember how many <20 hour PHR lasers i made for myself..

Are the 4x and 6x diodes at least a bit consistent, unlike like the PHR diodes?

It is hard for me to say if the 6x diodes are consistent. I only have one. This one is very consistent with itself, yes..

But from the currents people recommended for 200mW (190-210mA), there would seem to be some consistency.
I believe the 6x's are more consistent, simply because they are a higher power diode. It's the lower power diodes that show high inconsistencies when pushed... The 6x also has a lower wavelength than many PHRs and my test 4x. It drifts in wl. less with power and temperature.....

I also have the feeling 4x's are more consistent than PHRs, but not as much as 6x's. The test 4x has a wavelength closer to 6x, but it climbs. The beam profile is closer to 6x than PHR tho. Or somewhere in the middle at least..... The aspect ratio is better for sure, as there are lower losses in acrylics.
Also, everyone seems to be getting 140mW at 150mA, which would seem to suggest some consistency - everyone except for me for some reason, a reason which i need to research.

ok, I will be sending mine off to Igor, I have 6 new PM's today that I have yet to check, forgive me if i miss something in this post.

I has an inside man in the whole business, and so he basically knows the manufacturers, specs, etc. The only bad thing is that he is no business, and cannot buy in bulk from these manufacturers lol...

These 12x's have a HUGE copper backing, which i think is what serves as a heatsink. remember, its not mass, rather surface area that serves for better heatsinking.

I paid $80 for this baby, It better be 12x, OR ELSE... ;D ;D ;D

Amk confirmed he will send the sample to me in a fresh condition and it would seem Dave will also be testing one of these soon.

If both of us make a detailed graphs, that should exclude the possibility, that the diode was a random freak, and the very first kink will tell us how good it is..

You told me about your supplier telling you PHR's were 100xx and 12x's were 450xx, but he forgot what "xx" should be - obvously mW...

That didn't make sense at first, cos the PHR can't possibly be 100mW.. However, neither is the 12x 450mW. At least not CW! The 12x is 450mW pulsed, which gives an interesting information i've been looking for, for the longest time!

The PHR is a 50mW diode! And indeed it does behave like one...

So that part of what your supplier said makes sense. If the 450xx part is true........

What on earth!?! I just finished a post in the science/laser about how the 12x's were going to come much faster then predicted.Then I come over here and omg I called it ( well kind of).

I excited of the possibility that these are 12x BR as 'advertised' by the supplier, but I too am skeptical. I do have hope that what has been said is true...

As far as the 2-diode observation, are there any dvd/BR burners that won't burn cd's? It looks to me like the two diodes each have three pins and from what I've seen in my short time here leads me to believe that neither is an IR diode.

Cos we trully don't know for sure if these are better than 4x's, same, or even less powerful.


The suppliers gave us faulty info before. I researched where that idea (4x = 6x) came from, and they told me a customer sent them a photo of the 6x sled, they compared it to their stock photos and decided they are the same.

But preciselly because the 4x sled is the same as 6x, the diode can't be.


So if this supplier now went browsing for "Sanyo Blu Ray", and found the same thing we found "Sanyo announcing 450mW", and then decided it's the same thing, we could be screwed.

I asked the supplier what these are, and they said "Sanyo", but they don't know what drive or speed or anything.
They said "we not clear SF-AD112 whether is 12 speed lens. but it is Sanyo Blu-Ray burner lens".


I don't see any kind of high power guarantee in this...
