BTW the one test unit I got was not free :'( :'( its an 80 dollar diode!!!

so your using the same thread as the 4x-6x as the 12x? :-? doesnt make much sense considering the greater difference in powers? very nice find though. i wish i would have waited a while now seeing as how these are almost double the power... :'(

I would love to do the testing. I just finished my diode analyzer for the 4x's mostly, but it is meant for and would do a great job on any diode. It can make very precise plots and can go up to 2.3A  :. I would gladly pay for the diode, as long as i can test it..

If i had the diode analyzer finished before i started the 4x lifetime test, i could plot a "before and after" graph, to see what degradation looks like in detail. This is what i regret not doing on the test 4x. A before and afer graph would be extremelly informative. It would show if the "threshold climbing/slope staying the same" theory is true (it should be, since scientists came up with it), and if the kinks stay in the same place with power or in the same place with current.


For example, my 4x is today showing anything between 140-150mW.. The power drop is no longer a reliable indicator of degradation, because it dropped in the first kink. So i think the kinks stay in the same position with current, but without a before and after graph it's hard to say what is happening preciselly..


Otherwise, if you just push a diode till it blows, that doesn't give you too much usefull information. PHRs or even all 405nm diodes can be pushed to ridiculously high currents, and seemingly thrive there, but pops just hours or even minutes later. The point, for me at least, is finding a power, where a diode can survive upwards of a hundred hours. Better yet, several hundred. That would be a good reliable laser.

My test 4x is at 96 hours btw!


The 405nm diodes are not the same as reds. They behave much differently. With reds, you could find the knee, and go down on it a bit, and that would be a good long term power. These don't have knees, but they have kinks. And they degrade in a completelly different fashion from reds. These two things combined can give a false impression of what power they can survive..

For example, a red doesn't really allow you to go above the knee. Blu rays drop in the kink but slightly higher, they shoot up in power, pretending all is good. But they start degrading instantly.


I think 8x sleds would be good in any case. As far as i know, they can write 8x SL but the DL speed is lower than that of a 6x? The diode might not be more powerful, but it could be similar to the 6x.. Let's just pray to the gods it's not a flat frame type diode!

AGAIN: If you allow me to do the testing, i will pay for the sled. Getting good information is worth some money to me.

In any case, i would absolutelly love to hook one up to my diode analyzer, and plot graphs through an acrylic and the "Nichia lens", do an accelerated aging test on the cycler, and then plot two more graphs, again through both lenses, to see if the beam profile changes with the degradation...


My diode analyzer is twitching in anticipation..
This is the almost finished (lacks some LEDs) OmniDrive TM in "manual mode", where it helps test many diodes quickly, to find the safest power for each individually.
In "automatic mode" it plugs into my meter, and the meter sends all the data to the computer. The data can then be used to plot very accurate graphs in high resolution. A before and after graph would show any degradation in great detail!

They are most certainly not in developmental stage, if they are available as drives and being sold as sleds..

If they really come from a 12x writer, i would not be worried. Let's not judge a book by it's cover..

It will require taking one appart to determine how well it is really made. The black thing does look like plastic in the pictures, but if it's a writer diode, then it will have sufficient heatsinking somewhere in there. Maybe it's not even plastic. Altho some DVD writers are, and yet they contain open cans, if i'm not mistaken?

It's the diode that's important for us..

From the looks of it, it would seem that the bulk of the heatsinking is done by the copper underside of the sled. If it is of sufficient thickness (weight) it should be adequate heatsinking. Remember that the Mg based alloy used in normal sleds weighs next to nothing and that a pretty thin sheet of copper would provide a larger cooling mass...perhaps the reason behind the plastic structure (keep the weight down, while keeping the diode cool)?

Based on the way the bottom is built it seems the likely scenario. Picture taken from wesdamans thread in general.

Once Igor gets a hold of one of these diodes, it will end all the speculation for sure.

And until his 405 AR coated glass lenses are ready, we don't have anything that can handle the power without melting, unless you want to buy Merideth's :
