Re: 6x Blu-ray SLEDS GB! GET EM WHILE THEY LAST

Oh crap!

My warning label is now wrong!

It says "<200mW"! :(

But seriously.. I didn't expect we'd need more than 200 on a label for a blu ray any time soon..
Of course the question is, how long it can survive this.. I'll keep monitoring it for any non-temperature related power changes, and if it drops, i'll measure the threshold current.

EDIT: Hmm, i might be just under a kink.. I think the spot shifted slightly.. Need to lower the current and re-check.

oh sexy! that is such a good looking number for 405nm!

thanks for sharing!

Only 219mA.....

Altho, for that picture, i put an AR coated glass lens in... ;)

With a plastic lens it does 212mW.. Not bad either.
But the fun part is.. At 247mW it would last longer than at 212mW! :D

The raw output is around 256mW! The v1 glass lens only has a transmittance of 96% or so. (The v3 is more like 99.6, IIRC)

So lets say I was to use an Aixiz module with a standard glass lens and run ~219mA  what should I expect?

EDIT:
Also what driver and power supply are you using?

a standard glass lenses wouldnt do you any good. it will most likely be ar coated for red not 405nm

the glass lenses igort is talking about is specially coated for 405nm.

until his group buy is done you should just use the normal acrylic aixiz lenses

Igor, is this one of the GGWH20L diodes? Or is it one of the 6 X diodes that amk is getting on this group buy?

Well, diodes vary in efficiency, so every diode will give a different power at this current.

But if your diode was the same as mine, and you used a standard AixiZ glass lens, you should expect around 159mW, and you should expect your diode to die much faster.. That's because that lens is a triple element glass lens, and each element has both sides AR coated for 660nm.

AR coatings are meant to reduce optical losses through reflections from the two lens surfaces - they pass the light that would otherwise be reflected back into the diode. This way you get more power and less strain for the diode at the same time. But wrong AR coatings can increase reflections compared to uncoated lenses. 650nm coatings look blue - that's because they reflect blue.

Those lenses are not even too good with reds, btw.. I get a higher power with an overlooked AR coated acrylics in my reds. Only the Meredith is better than that.

Like thesk8nmidget said, for now you should use the clear AixiZ acrylics. The lens i used in that picture is a lens that was custom made to specs and AR coated for blu rays, with less than 0.5% reflections at 405nm.. The one i sent to Dave and Jayrob for testing...

I use my constant current boost driver, powered by an AA size Li-Ion, in the tiny host i posted a page or two ago. Due to the high efficiency of the driver the small laser doesn't overheat even at this current.

You can use the FlexDrive for similar results.

But keep in mind, i am NOT saying this is a safe power for the 6x! I am torturing my 6x to see if it dies, so i know what power to use with the ones i have headed my way.

I don't have any of these sleds yet.. The diode in the torture chamber is the one from the LG drive, which GooeyGus got for me.

So i'm really keeping my fingers crossed, that they are one and the same..

EDIT: It's holding steady for now. No power drop noticable yet. And i had it on for many minutes at once, several times, taking measurements and beam shots with different lenses.. I'm hoping i can capture the difference in the beam diameter.

Hey guys, You know the more you talk and brag about these 6x diodes, that your killing everyone here with the suspense of waiting to get thiers. :'(

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D none the less.

So my 1st 6x diode i should punch it with 230mW huh??

JK, it cost me nearly $100 dollars for 1 diode, so its still abit pricey for us guys here down under in OZ

Did you custom build your constant current boost driver. Right now I am using DDL's and I have a Flex on the way but I would like to try your driver if it is something I can build. Do you have a schematic?

Re: 6x Blu-ray SLEDS GB! GET EM WHILE THEY LAST

I build my drivers by hand. I etch the circuits and solder the SMD components.. It's not quite as easy as a 317, and the parts are not cheap either, not to mention hard to get in small quantities.

But together with Phenol and Woop, we posted several versions of it, in the beginning of this year. It's burried somewhere deep in "Experiments & Modificatons", available to anyone with the guts to try. ;)

However, i would NOT suggest trying to make a switching driver for an expensive diode, unless you have a scope to test it for spikes, oscillations and switching noise. Circuits operating at high frequencies like that don't follow the same rules as linear drivers. I spent a week behind a scope, testing my driver under all possible and impossible conditions, before deciding it was good enough for my 6x.

In cases like this, it's better to resort to a driver someone already tested and debugged, like the FlexDrive for example.

Re: 6x Blu-ray SLEDS GB! GET EM WHILE THEY LAST

Well that makes perfect sense now. I want to get into that but I will have to wait until I can get the equipment to teach myself how to do it.

I am not your average DIY guy but I see what you are saying about the testing aspect. I guess I will just stick tot he flex drive for now unless you sell yours to board members..... ;D

well, I wouldnt want to give out that info cause there are always people on here who like to steal everyone else's businesses....

::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

@ themonk: lol i did stop selling red diodes... :-[

@ PS3 picture guy:
anyhow,

I have been working for a few weeks on this, I had to gather AMPLE amounts of info to get this to work. It hurts when your hard work goes down the drain because some 14 year old sitting at a computer wants to host a GB and make a profit out of it.

I am making almost NO profit off of these things, but if someone were to "compete" with me, then I would have to stop selling altogether. when I stop selling, then I buy less from my supplier, and he gives me not as good of a deal.

The reason I am able to obtain cheap prices is that I have bought A LOT from this supplier. Hosting a separate GB therefore hurts EVERYONE as a community, and brings prices up for us hobbyists.

so think for the WHOLE of the community. if "your supplier" offers these at "similar prices", why bother? Because there is something in it for YOU?!? if the price is the same, you are only hurting everyone else.

A 1/4W of Bluray Power!
I just know I'm going to hurt myself with one of these .
Can't wait to get them.
Not to mention IgorT's 405 AR coated lenses!
