Hi everybody!

I got a quote from techhood for $650 a piece in quantities of five for this laser diode array:

455nm 466nm 28W 32W Blue Laser Diode Bank 8 Pcs 466nm 3 5W 4W Blue LD Inside | eBay

According to rhd, the laser diodes are good for 4A a piece for an output of 5W, leading to a total output of 40W. As the beams travel nearly parallel to each other, that means all 8 beams can be treated as one with a convex lens, meaning in theory we can focus all 40W of it down to a single point

We need 5 people to do this GB. The cost will be $650 for the LDA, plus shipping which will be ~$20 to and from me.

Spots:
1. styropyro
2.
3.
4.
5.

Also, for those interested, rhd has looked into the option of a custom CNC'd host and 8x buck driver array that will cost ~$250. Please mention if you are interested!

Let's build some death rays!!! :D

They may actually be pushable beyond 5W. Just haven't tried. They're individually rated at 3.5W, so it's entirely possible that they can go beyond 5W based on what we've seen with other "3.5W" diodes. The second portion of that line is styropyro saying it, not me (I'm not fantastic with lens theory), but it sounds plausible to me.

These are neat arrays. Here's a photo of the output at ~20 feet:

What use would the array as a whole have? Just curios .

The appeal is 40W of visible laser light from a somewhat handheld source. It is definitely crazy, but you have to be at least a little bit crazy to have a hobby like this. :D

That'd be one hell of a projector :D.

Well, considering the M140 uses 24x1W diodes (Don't recall what they are actually ran at, I think it's around 1W) for a total of 24 ish watts, 8x3.5W isn't that much more. Just a heck of a lot more compact, easier to work with, and most likely cheaper.

I was just looking at one of these arrays last night on techhood's web site, I was interested in them for a project I am currently working on putting several diodes in this same kind of array for a pointer, but with a cylindrical lens up front to make a very bright line. I'd like to buy one, but I have to wait until a future date. However, I've put my name on RHD's buy list for the host, I will have to buy the host first and find a way to get one of these later.

Don't pull too hard at that thread, or a lot of what we do here starts to come apart :)

I may have just found my new favourite quote on here...

But don't forget that if these really are 465nm or so, they'll be about twice as bright per mW.

I'll buy into this. Are all items to complete this included?

Thanks, Carl

Just the laser diode array by the looks of things. Unless you spend the extra $250 and get the host + drivers from the other GB.
