Alright, fast forwarding this a bit. Going to convert this thread straight-away into an actual groupbuy.

The Background -
We ran a feeler for a DD groupbuy this summer, and decided on a FireDragon 532 300mW model. When DD originally approached me, I had some personal rules/requirements in order for me to feel comfortable assisting in the process, most of which would apply here. The background is worth reading:
http://laserpointerforums.com/f55/f...-dinodirect-300mw-firedragon-532nm-64677.html

The First Groupbuy -
I think it was a success. Most (or all?) of our lasers came in over spec. They arrived relatively quickly, and I've had a new message almost every week since, from someone asking if it was too late to jump in on the groupbuy (of course it HAS been too late for months, and DD isn't even selling these lasers directly anymore). Here's the actual first groupbuy thread:
http://laserpointerforums.com/f55/g...2nm-149-go-collecting-contact-info-65565.html

And again, I must stress -
I'm not LaserMan, I'm not affiliated with them, I don't work for them, or with them, and I've turned down receiving any gift card, thank-you payment, discount, or coupon of any kind. I'm on the GB list for a 500mW unit, and I will be buying that unit for the same price as everyone else. There's a tag at the end of each URL below, but that has nothing to do with me - that's Kath's LaserMan employee tag so that on her end the groupbuy sales get properly attributed to her. I'm not getting anything from this, other than the benefit of having some input on the lasers that got chosen for the forum's selection. That's it. At the same time, I'm not warranting anything here. I'm not shipping the lasers, LaserMan is. I'll never see them (apart from my own order), and I'll have no role in testing them, shipping them, or verifying any output powers, etc. I'm not even a middleman here. I'm just a glorified secretary. If something doesn't happen as awesomely as you hoped for, don't scream at me ;)

The Options -
This is neat. We can actually choose THREE (3) different FireDragon options to choose from. As long as there are 10 participants in total, we will get the group-buy prices. I thought this would be good, since the new addition is a more expensive 500mW FireDragon, and not everyone may have this in their budget. So we're also going to add a 250mW cheaper FireDragon. We can't quite get the same prices as we did for the first GB on the 300mW unit, since the prices have actually gone up since then, but the dollar value of the discount itself is actually higher. I've worked with LaserMan to figure out the FireDragons where they have the largest margin to discount. One note: Logistically and financially speaking, I don't have the time to grab and review one of the 500mW units. So, consider that model "un-reviewed".

----------------------------

Option 1 - FireDragon I 532nm 250mW - Site price $194.39, GB discount price roughly $146.00
Firedragon-I 532nm 250mw Flashlight Style Handheld Elite Green Laser Pointer Kit (Certified Power Guaranteed)

Option 2 - FireDragon III 532nm 300mW - Site price $202.39, GB discount price roughly $172.39
Firedragon-III 532nm 300mW Flashlight Style Elite Green Laser Pointer Kit (Certified Power Guaranteed)

Option 3 - FireDragon III 532nm 500mW - Site price $423.99, GB discount price roughly $339.19
Firedragon-III 532nm 500mW Flashlight Style Elite Green Laser Pointer Kit(Certified Power Guaranteed)

----------------------------

Once we get at least 10 participants, I'll close the list, collect email contact details, and forward that info to LaserMan. They'll provide you with the coupon codes to get the discounted prices on each laser. At least, that's how it worked last time, and I'm presuming the process will be the same this time around.

The List:
1) RHD - 500 mW
2) richard86 - 500 mW
3) bobhaha - 300 mW
4) azzman - 500 mW
5) Presarian - 500 mW
6) Presarian - 300 mW
7) Kalahari - 300 mW
8) cheech226 - 500 mW
9) Jmillerdoc - 500 mW
10) plexus - 500 mW

Re: Feeler #2: Doing a second organized LaserMan (Dinodirect) FireDragon Group-Buy

Hey rhd, so is this the same EXACTLY as that of the previous GB? Because it seems that the company selling it this time round is not DD but laserman? Correct me if i am wrong but are they the same company? And i am up for the groupbuy. BEEN WAITING MONTHS FOR THIS OMG! Can i have 2 units of option 2 (FireDD III)? Put me up in the list for now :)

Option 2 is probably the same unit. Laserman is the former DinoDirect high powered lasers section. They're a new "sub site" of them - apparently.

Of course, as is the nature of this stuff, you never know anything for sure. We don't know that this round will be as overspec as the last one (or even overspec at all). And this should go without saying, but I'm not warranting any of this myself. I have no more knowledge about these particular items than anyone else on this forum.

My role here, as with last time, is basically just to:

1) Help focus the selection of laser to something that would appeal to LPF members. DD (LM) doesn't normally understand what appeals to us. They suggest 650nm lasers @ 200mW - stuff that we can build ourselves. So I've done the same thing as last time. I've tried to weed through the lasers that they can discount (they can't discount everything, because of different margins), and help to keep the selection focused on something we can't get elsewhere for as good a price.

2) Help coordinate the list of members taking part.

I'll note that I've also asked for pricing on a 500mW 532nm FireDragon as a third option.

I'll also note, that we're going to SELECT one of the options, and then that option will become the groupbuy. This thread isn't the groupbuy. This is a selection thread. So no names now, and ultimately there will be ONE laser model.

I don't expect that the price discount on their 500mW units will be very high (relative to the cost of that laser). Their 500mW FireDragons start at $370.

I'll also ask whether maybe we can do a groupbuy that allows selection between two models.

IE, we need 10 purchasers, but perhaps those 10 can be spread across two laser options. Maybe a 300 and a 500, or a 250 and a 300.

We're 12 hours apart, so I only hear back from them late at night.

Re: Feeler #2: Doing a second organized LaserMan (Dinodirect) FireDragon Group-Buy

I'm in for option #2... #3 sounds good in theory... but we don't know their characteristics. Its pretty easy to judge that #2 will have somewhat the same output as GB1, but we don't know how the #3 will preform.

Again, #2 seems like the logical choice... unless someone wants to step up and grab #3 beforehand :D

Keep in mind that #3 isn't even on the table yet. It was an after thought on my end, and I asked them about it during their night-time. So hopefully a reply will come later this evening.

My 3rd option might not actually be an option.

If #3 WAS an option, I would do the same thing as last time, and order one myself to review first.

Hey,

You can definitely take part. However, this is a group buy (albeit a slightly different than normal one), so we need commitments for the list. If you're just potentially interested, then I can't add you to the list, but if you're onboard and ready to go (as soon as we hut 10), then I can :)

I'm defiantly in for #2... and would be interested in #3 if the review comes back positive.

@azzman, There are ways around customs... but I won't say it in public. If you or I end up getting one we'll get it shipped specially ;)
