Re: Feeler: GB/DIY RED's and Blu-ray's (OFFICIAL)

Alvast bedankt, Teun.

Re: Feeler: GB/DIY RED's and Blu-ray's (OFFICIAL)

Teun,

Graag in het engels praten. Als je geen engels kan, zeg het dan ff via PM (Speak Englesh please. If you don't understand English then talk via PM.)

He's asking If there is a way to dim a Class 3B laser pointer because the insurance company does not cover health problems caused by illegal pointers. The answer is NO, because dimmed ot not, it is juridically still an illegal pointer, capable of more power, and furthermore it is modified without supervision of certified optical engineerer, which might be used as an argument against you that the laser might have become even more dangerous.

Then he asked if there are any pointers between a 30mW (illegal) and 5mW (too dim). The answer is No. Even a 10mW pointer is class 3B, which is still illegal.

?? - Confirmation required.

* - Includes increased risk rate. Why ? Unlike the closed cans found in Blu-Rays and 16x burners, the 20x burner uses an "open can" laser diode which has a larger and longer heat sink. Apart from missing a glass dust-protecting window, which increases the output by itself, it can conduct heat better. The chip can be driven by a larger power because now it can dissipate the heat quicker. The diode is glued into place in the drive pickup and extracting it is a process that requires both delicacy and brute force (sawing and pulling). I have done this two times now and both times succeeded. Also, because the chip is completely exposed, any dust floating in the air and just happens to touch the microscopic output facet will cause COD (Catastrophic Optical Damage). I don't expect it to succeed every time, so I will need to buy an extra drive for every diode I screw up. I made a guess as to how many diodes I can extract successfully for every screwed up diode. I estimate this ratio to be at least 6:1. This will mean that I will rate 1/6th of the price of the drive on top of the rate for the time I will spend extracting it. Note on temperature: Having better heat sinking doesn't mean there is less heat, it means it just spreads faster. The amount of heat generated in total is higher, and eventually it will heat op the entire module which contains the diode. An AixiZ module is not made for this kind of heat production, and will eventually overheat. To prevent this, the operator has to duty-cycle the laser so that the module never heats up too much. The maximum temperature allowed for maximum diode lifespan is about the same as human body temperature. Any temperature above that will shorten the expected lifetime of the diode. Keep this in mind when you buy a 20x laser module.

Currently there is an internet provider malfunction in my area so the payments can be a little delayed. I'm using internet at university at the moment, this will be only at Tuesdays and Thursdays.

To be on the safe side, I will move the deadline to Tuesday June 24th. (changed back to June 20th because my internet is back)

My internet is back, so the new deadline is invalidated.

When I get the last payment from luke_j, I will start ordering the parts. If he does not pay before June 20th, I will continue without him.

The parts are being ordered. I expect to start shipping some orders before next week. The blu-ray orders may have to wait a bit longer.

Yesterday I finally received and harvestred the sony REDs, one week too late. I'm still waiting for AJK's Aixiz and amkdeath's UV's.

Are these going to be worth it?

I prepared the curves for three of the diodes.

Red_curves.gif

These are 242, 235 and 237mW respectively. (at 420mA)

I bought 7 drives. Diodes 6 and 7 are being shipped bare to dar303, so I could not measure them (I did test them). Diodes 2 and 3 were among the brightest of the remaining (244 and 240mW), I'll keep those myself. The remaining three diodes are for godmonkey (2 psc) and nvmextc (1 psc).

I will let you two decide which ones you get. The first one to respond gets the chance to choose the brightest.

A nice picture.

Note the blurry spot of the leftmost. Later I exchanged the lenses with another aixiz. (and gained 3mW) They appeared to be exactly the same size :D

Two nice long open cans arrived today but I'm going on vacation to Italy tomorrow so I can't test them for a while! :(
