But you shouldn't worry, if you pay for it.. Even if more people pay, than was originally intended, he can probably just order that amount then....

Hey all

Well... I got amazing news! The orders JUST reached 100 units sold.

I also got a response for the Go Ahead from the supplier.

So... for all those slacking until the last minute, here's the 2 week notice!

How easy do these burn out? Should I order more than 1 if I hope on keeping my bluray for awhile? I'm not planning on bumping up the juice any more than the stock driver in Kenom's laser barrel supplies..

If you're talking about how long they live, i think you shouldn't have any problems, once it's safelly in place with a cap directly on it... Especially with battery power and the current below 39mA..


They are extreemelly sensitive to ESD and mechanic shock tho..
I managed to kill the two of mine from the first group buy this way. The first fell on the table from 6 inches high, which completelly changed it's electrical characteristics.. Unless it was weird from the start..

The second one was wonderfull, untill i touched it to reposition the beam.. It was the only time i didn't ground myself, and because the driver was powered by the PSU, this provided a path to the ground for the ESD. I thought it would be safe, once in the circuit and with a cap, but i was wrong.. From that moment on i'm only using battery power for all my LDs, simply because it's safer..


Then it would seem, there are also some differences between them. It's possible to get two, that behave very differently.. This is why i ordered two again, hoping that at least one of them is bright at safe current levels... If i get two good ones, even better..

How easy is it to extract the diode from the unit? I have had trouble with diodes from CD drives leaving me frustrated and unhappy.

Quite easy, just two screws at the heatsink and cut the ribbon cable. Then poke out the diode from the heatsink with a pin and you are done.
And don't forget to ground yourself.

Why were you extracting IR diodes from CD drives? They hardly put out any visible light, and are much more dangerous because of this, especially if you think "why is it not working" and look into it directly..
Or do you know all this and was it just for practice?


Otherwise the Blue Rays are so easy to get out, that you have to put something soft underneath, in case they just fall out.. This is what happened to my first, and it dropped only like 5-6 inches to the desk and the fun was over..


But if you take care when extracting, and ground yourself, you should be safe.. Also, only use batteries for powering the driver circuit.. A 9V block is fine for BRs, since they don't need that much current.. I use 9V Ni-MHs.. I took them appart, to get to the tiny cells inside, so i can make the enclosure smaller..


Powering a BR LD driver from a PSU can kill it, if you forget to ground yourself only once, even after it is in the circuit with a capacitor on top, since the PSU provides a path to the ground..
I know, that i repeated this at least 5 times by now, but some people don't seem to read entire threads, before asking questions... Better safe than sorry.. Don't want this to happen to anyone else..



Oh, and you should also leave the tiny round PCB on the LD, since it makes it easyer to solder cables to it, and reduces the danger of solder flowing down and shorting the pin to the base of the LD (GND).. Happened to me once on a 5mW red, and i spent half an hour cleaning it with a scalpel.. But it worked.

Why, well I was thinking about performing laser eye surgery on myself........ (yeah, it was just for practice)

That's good then.. I also extract the IRs, and use them for testing some more complicated driver circuits.

I know what you mean.. I killed many LDs myself, before i learned what i was doing wrong.. But now i finally feel confident, that i can work with them without killing them anymore

Safelly extracting and powering different LDs can be quite easy, as long as you follow some simple safety measures. But it usually takes many mistakes and dead LDs to learn..


But ever since i only use battery power, i'm not worried about them anymore.. I must have killed at least 6 different types by powering the driver from the PSU or even the LDs directly (with current limiting and a cap). I can't believe it took me untill i killed my second blue ray, till i learned what i'm doing wrong.. Whenever i power something from the PSU, and walk around or just slide around on my chair and come back, i feel a powerfull spark, when i touch the circuit, now that the weather is so dry..


Now i built myself a simple adjustable voltage power supply, that uses a huge lead battery i had laying around. I use this one for testing more powerfull lasers, like the open can, before putting them in their enclosure with their own batteries... But for blue rays a 9V is fine as well. An open can, on the other hand, can suck a 9V Ni-MH dry in just a couple of minutes..
