Where are you guys from? I'm from Slovenia, EU, and i have a "special" order (Daedal has to put an invoice into the envelope for our anal customs and wrap them in ESD labels, so they wouldn't take them out and touch them), and he said he would be sending them out this weekend.

So i guess we shall all receive them within two weeks.

Sweden here. Invoice, customs? Could there be a problem? I don't want to lose these.
Daedal, would you please PM me when you sent them out, because I think you got the wrong Email. Thanks.

Theoretically, the international law says that all international shipments have to contain a commercial invoice if sent by a company, or some kind of receipt, if sent by a regular person. The invoice should also contain the tariff classification, and explain what it is. The value is also supposed to be marked on the outside.

I import a lot of stuff, so i know how our customs think, and how annoying they can be sometimes, so i just write the invoice and send it to Daedal, so that he can include it. But in practice, in most countries, the customs are not nearly as annoying as ours.

You don't have to worry about the fact, that these contain laser diodes. The worst thing, that can happen to you is, that they will contact you, and ask you to show them the invoice of what you paid. After that, you might have to pay custom fees and taxes on the price. When / if they ask you what these are, just say some parts for an electronics project.

The correct tarrif classification is: 8522100000 – optical reader heads or optical pickup heads but it's not really sensitive. It's just, that they have to classify it as something, if they bill you. Ours will definatelly bill me.

I usually use "Surplus electronic components, no commercial value" ;)

Another thing to notice is that if the package is UNDER 3 ounces, no Customs paperwork is even required to send from the U.S. to another area :) I had been filling out paperwork endlessly until I found out those jerks at the post office were purposely being obstinate ! They also were classifying the packages incorrectly, and WAY overcharging me on postage ! If the package is under 16oz, and less than 3/4" thick - the postage is almost 30 cents per ounce cheaper ! It would be classified as a "large flat envelope" instead of a package. Damn, I LOVE online postage programs ! They have saved me quite literally hundreds of dollars now !

I recently had dealings with a gent in OH, he has a contract for service and upgrades to helicopters with FLIR systems (police choppers). I sent him a couple of 808nm units expedited, with no trouble (regular post). He then needed an item to be shipped overnight, I sent it fed ex on the Thursday and received a call from fedex the following Tuesday. Their customs dept was holding the package claiming that when sending medication, proper paperwork must be filed . So long story short, customs can hinder your business, and should be avoided if possible.

How did the customs mistake lasers for medication?!?
Were they just bare diodes stuck in foam? How did that turn out in the end?

Express shipping can actually make things slower sometimes. Especially, since the customs look into it more carefully. I just had this wonderfull experience with the CNI laser from China.

Stuff ordered from DX or KD always gets through the regular postal customs office without any problems whatsoever, which surprises me. I had a few lasers opened and inspected, but they never charged me anything. Luckily my country doesn't have any regulations on lasers at all. No lazer craze here.. Yet.. :)

Im not sure how they came up with "medication", at first I thought they were holding it as medical equipment. So I was cautious on what I said, it was then that I realized that they were holding it as if it were a bottle of pills. The unit in the box was a hard acrylic case with the diode inside, I asked them if they had x-rayed it, the answer was yes. I then asked how many pills they see with a metallic signature? Every time I ship with fed ex, I have had nothing but problems. Needless to say, I filed a claim for the 50 bucks I spent on the express shipment (overnight) that took 5 days to deliver. :p

So they thought you were sending one (1) pill in a plastic box to someone?  ;D :D
Yeah, customs are fun. I have my own collection of customs related stories.. Most of them i would rather forget, and a few i hope they will forget. ;)

BTW, wannaburn.. Have you built many Blue Rays so far? I know you noticed, that some of them are burning, but what would you say is the ratio of powerfull vs. weak ones? Last time i ordered two and got a weak and a super powerfull one. This time i ordered three, hoping that at least one of them is the powerful type. Preferably more..

Chimo managed to get 78mW out of one by accident. Now that was sick! It actually burnt it's own window. :)

I wanted to use this, but the envelope has to be flat all across the board... and they do check the thickness because they pass it through a sorter that literally only allows 3/4" high things to pass through... and others, if not strong and sturdy, get crushed by the wheel... :-?

I just package them in a box, and wrap them up with more than enough peanuts... better safe than sorry in the end. :)

Fun, fun, fun! ;D

What do you think they'll say when we start investigating these??

I hear ya ! the boxes I use are ALMOST 3/4" thick - and they used to be jackasses about it, until I started printing my postage at home ! THEN they couldn't do anything about it !! Muahahahahaha ! I have not had any packages returned because of that (yet...knock on wood !!!) But when the post office switches modes on you, and starts charging you the higher rate for a "package" they are smacking it to you with no lube ! (gross, I know! hurts like hell, too...the wallet, that is....buncha pervs, geesh !) Anywho - Once I took over the stamping process, and arranging for pickup, or dropping them in their box - if it is marked "fragile" they are not supposed to run it through machinery, and need to hand cancel it. Uhm...yeah, anyways - I have had stuff sent to me from you before, and it ALWAYS has arrived safely ! :)
