It took some shopping but I found these for 19$ at ebay- (just the bricks)
Sam's classifireds always has a few but maybe not as many as a GB would want-and his stuff comes with lifetime warranty and is reflected in his prices. my plan is to build two pairs of HeNe lamps- dagiun (et al) made a set long ago and they really look nice.

Some mini red henes come from old laserdisc burners- --or maybe they are just players- the first bar code scanners at stores were red HeNes too iirc.


many pages of info on them at sam's-- my lamps will be made with tubes a tad bigger than the one in my pic below --which BTW did not come on when i plugged in the wallwart-just now .. BUT about 5min later it came on- and when off after 30 seconds- came back on another minute later and has gone off again- wallwarts may NOT be the very best choice of PS- at least not the cheapies- regulated is better

the one i am using is(it says) 12vdc @500mA-but you cannot go by that all the time--

FYI a green HeNe bare tube looks about the same color inside as a red.-its only green after it leaves the tube..

If I can get just a tube I will probably be in for one. I plan to source on of those 20 dollar brick psu's and do a lamp sort of things as well. Probably difficult but would look badass.

Might just make it a tube grab then with the supplies tacked on as extra. As for delays on and off it's all in the regulation of the brick. Well see where all the interest sits first.

they sure make a nice lamp-- I am trying to hide the wires- maybe a long thin mirror froma flat bed scanner to reflect the plasma beam and hide the wiring- they look nice with plexiglass and or chrome parts.. I will hide the bricks in the bases-- check out the one Fiddy made- inspireing--search 'HeNe Lamp' for more on this..

Those are nice tubes, but they are frankly more like flashlights. Lol Ive used those tubes. Their divergence is terrible! But assuming you get them for 30 bucks unbroken it's not a bad deal at all

True That-- but for a lamp who cares?? All my red HeNes have a very thin beam(~1mm) and excellent divergence.--

I agree. Most of the normal small HeNes have a worse divergence anyway, though it's usually intentional. They make the OC face concave slightly so it can be refocused according to the demand. Smallest one I've ever seen was a 05-lhr-001. It literally doesn't have a cathode...no can for cooling, Just the electrode itself in the mirror mount! It's super tiny- like fits in the palm of my hand tiny! Can't run it for very long or it burns up fast as a result.

That's a new one on me- do you have a thread on it or some pics??

There is just something magical about gas lasers-- I like the fact that most can run all day- no duty cycle nor batteries to replace-- and some do a good job of warming a room in the winter-- but its prolly not a cheap room heater!!
also they are a part of laser history-- they also glow (inside) if held close to a 'plasma ball'- a way to do some checking if you do not yet have a PS for it..

If it will not glow the I doubt it will ever lase either.

cool those came out nice-will have to make more pics but with a tripod next time.. someplace i have more bare tubes with much more open glass than these two NECs in my hand-- BTW if you w'ant to learn much more about gas lasers you must spend some time at Dr. Sam's-- he da man'-- no doubt!!

A wall wart is the adopted name to the part you plug into the wall. Hence the term wart or bump on the wall xD the brick takes a lower DC voltage, so you'd gave to find something like this: Amazon.com : Etekcity® Wall Adapter Power Supply 110 - 240V AC input - output 9 Volt 9V DC 650mA 2.1mm X 5.5mm Plug : Electronics and then solder it to the DC brick. Maybe this is an excuse for me to get that Variac I've always fancied... just set it to 110V and then use a travel adapter (so it fits our plugs) and bob's your teapot, am I correct?

Sadly no I haven't taken pictures of it as I havn't lit it yet. It require very low power. Only about 1KV @ 3mA...

I'm happy the tubes are bare and the plasma is exposed. That's one of the top reasons I want a HeNe

Can't you see if you find a source for the cheaper $20 psu WBS is talking about? That would close the deal for me (and for others as well, I hope).

I'll see what I can do. I rarely find stuff that cheap in large quantity. As I said, these are matched supplies that specifically power these heads, those 12V supplies I'll have to check on.

no problem. also @hak nice NECs man. I used to have a small Spectra Physics head that was like those. nice tube, I miss it. those ones are much like the one in my avatar pic. the large aluminum 'can' inside it is the cathode array, and is used to maintain stable discharge and is also responsible for keeping it cool, the smaller that cathode is in relation to the tube size and power the shorter its lifespan will be. the LHR-001 doesn't have one. just each of the mirror mounts. the cathode is just a little aluminum stub. you can't run it continually, but i'm sure it makes for a pretty sight like the SP-127, since you can see the whole bore light up its a cute lil tube. a baby HeNe!
