Hehe matt,

That's what I'm still figuring out. It won't be fair to others if only some people get the normal hosts.

That's why I'm going to speak to Barry, and see if he is able to get the ones Dorcy sent us working, if we can, we can sort something out. But I'm sorry, it won't be sent to anyone before Christmas.

Give me some time ;) I'm trying.

~Tom

haha i totally understand. im very happy that your helping figure this whole thing out. and i know youll figure out something that will work out great for all of us. =]
take all the time that you need....
but not to long ;)

:thanks:

Is Mark going to ship out the 11 old style ones to Dave and then ask that we send 11 of the new style ones back, or could we sell the 11 extra new style ones to raise money for Barry to make more heatsinks that would work with the new style? Also, if these are the same upc codes and model numbers, I would bet we could buy whatever target has in stock (my target still has the old style personally) then just return the new style to target? they wouldn't care and neither would shoppers at target as we are the only ones using it for laser host. If we could find enough at target then we wont need to design a new Heat sink. Not sure how many targets you (Dave) have near you though.

Just my thoughts

I apologize, but I did and didn't see anyone mention anything about returning to Target or if Mark is expecting a return just that shipping to dave is free. I must be missing it because I have read every post in this thread.

Returning the hosts we just got to target, in exchange for the old style would probably work, but it is morally wrong. You cant just buy it, then swap it with the ones we don't want, and ask for your money back I don't want to do something like that, sorry.

As much as I want the original classic dorcy jr. I'm willing to make do with what we have.
If we do get the 11 old style hosts. I would have no problem paying again, even full price and give up the new style. The classic dorcy jr. is just something I really want right now.

I used to work at target in college, I see your point of view, but I disagree about it being morally wrong. Target sells Dorcy Jr lights to people who want flashlights, this is the same model, just has a slight variation in design that to anyone not making a laser is insignificant. The new design may actually be more appealing to general customers. Target would lose absolutely nothing by doing that swap not a single penny and it would not hurt anyone at all. I fail to see the moral dilemma. It could even be explained at the time of purchase to them exactly what happened, and I bet if we are friendly with it target would still do the swap even knowing the situation just to be helpful. At least the one I worked at would have.

It's nice to know there are some of the old style left, it's a shame there is not enough for all of us :(

If you are shipping the old style out, I would be willing to buy one + postage because I already have a full body heatsink and the whole point of this GB was so I could get a host to use the heatsink with.

I've just got my new style host btw, it looks cool, I've been trying to work up a few ideas on how we might be able to get this to work.

Just in case anyone is interested, I see these guys still list the DJR-host as available. Of course, I would have no idea how to tell which version you would get. I have ordered from them a couple of times in the past with no problems.

I've had a little idea for the dorcy host, I have no idea if this would work but it'll require ditching the front part of the host for a new head which could be made by Dark_horse.

But I guess some people may see this as loosing the point of using a dorcy host. Here's my idea anyway:

dorcyhost.png

Basically it's a new machined head which would just join onto the current dorcy body. I'm sure if this is done properly it could look quite good, we could even remake a style similar to the original dorcy head and anodize it. :)

And Dark_Horse to buy a dorcy from them and have them ship it to the UK they quoted $51 lol :)

Edit:

In the picture I said we could place the flexdrive on this "paid" I ment the little pad which is on the end of the body, it has a spring poking out which touches the head holding the LED.

I honestly really like that idea but at the same time im a little iffy because i really like the original look of the host also. also, we dont know if Dark has the time to machine all of these heatsinks for everyone.

im glad that you thought of this though =]]

I believe that there will be a much simpler solution to the problem. A larger diameter heat sink and a thin "snap ring" would make these hosts usable. It would not make the older heat sinks usable, but these hosts would not be "wasted."

Im sorry Dave, i dont really think i understand what your trying to say.
Are you saying that this idea would work with just a little bit of modification?
Or are you saying that this idea wouldnt work?

I think he's saying that while my idea would work, there is a simpler solution, which would be to make a larger heat sink and then a snap on ring which would hold it in place.

But I think depending on how hard machining a front end with an inner thread is, maybe it's not as hard as it seems, where as creating a snap on ring could be difficult unless I'm missing something :)

Doing that you would have to create two components, where as with a front screw on heatsink you only need one :)

I personally would be willing to pay for a new heatsink, it's unfair for Dark to have to machine new heatsinks because of some unforeseen events.

I believe Likeitbright made a larger similar version to the front heatsink idea, he would get a host, then create a large heatsink to be attached on the front and then polished it up like an RPL head and it looked great, if it is possible to get a RPL style heatsink on the dorcy body that would be very cool, but obviously a lot smaller, and if it was only slightly larger than the bodys diameter it would flow with the design quite well.

I'm saying that we will most likely be able to make these heads work with a MUCH simpler solution. All we need is the same type of heat sink we already have, but in a 4mm larger diameter and some sort of thin "snap ring" to hold it in place.

We do not need a whole new head with "steps", fins, and threading. This idea would still require some sort of set screw from the outside to hold the module in place or we would have to construct a module that could be "spun" as the head was screwed on! We could accomplish the same outcome with a 4mm larger diameter heat sink and a set screw through the outside of the existing head.

We WILL be able to use the stock heads on these hosts. It is simply a matter of figuring out how we are going to hold the heat sink in place (set screw or snap ring)

Peace,
dave

**EDIT** In the flashlight configuration, the "snap ring" is simply the lens.

I like the snap ring idea. It would look nicer than having an exterior set screw IMO. Also, it helps for people who already got their host, so they don't have to ship them all to D_H, they can instead have the snap ring and heat sink shipped to them.

That's a good point Dave, it would require a set screw to hold the module in place and that would be pointless, because we could just drill a set screw in the host to hold a new, simpler heatsink in place.

I was hesitant at first to break the window and stuff on my host in case we weren't going a head with this, but I can't wait any longer so I'm gonna break it up and see what the head looks like inside :)

Btw, bryce the exterior heatsink wouldn't require the host being shipped off, the heatsink would just be sent because it would be screwed on replacing the current head with a small set screw on the outside holding the module in place. Just like the current full body heatsinks have.

EDIT:

Breaking this window on the front is a pain in the arse, it's like nothing will get through it lol
