If you could set a diode to 80mW with acrylics and measure with the Meredith, that would help a lot.....

P.S. You're getting one from the first batch already.

Looking forward to testing the lenses! :)

I have made comparisons with the Meredith acrylic lens vs the Meredith glass lens on 3 different blu-ray diodes.
PS3
6 X
803T
All at different currents and readings. The one constant, was the percentage of increase!

For the blu-rays - 30%
For the reds - about 20%

So, for an 80mW blu-ray reading with a Meredith acrylic lens, you will see 104mW's using the Meredith glass lens. ;)

As it should be.. :)

Thanks Jayrob!

I already updated the numbers.. You helped me a lot with all the Meredith lens info. It helped simulate the Meredith lens in comparison to the custom one, and it turned out, they are almost the same, the custom being a bit larger. Both have a NA larger than the diode, so they will both collect all the light.

Even with all the calculations and simulations, i realize i'm still taking a certain risk with the first batch. If they don't work like they are supposed to, i'll be left with a bunch of expensive lenses.

But if they do work, this could be a great lens for this hobby!

If the custom lens reaches the power of the Meredith, it'll be worth it. If it should be a bit better for Blue Rays because of the 405nm coating, even better! The power increase for reds could be a bit lower (because of the multilayer coating), unless they give it a 650nm AR coating only, but it would still be better than acrylics and just as focusable.

But i guess we will know soon enough.

IgorT,
I am in for at least (2) 405 coated lenses, and (1) multi-/red coated lens. ;D
Great job on these, custom lenses have been a long-time coming, I feel confident these are going to be great.
So, what would I expect for beam diameter, larger or smaller than a Aixis-glass? (controlled by Focal-length right?)

The beam diameter should be a bit smaller, than with acrylics. I have not yet compared the beam diameter of the acrylic to that of the AixiZ glass lens, but i can do so, as soon as i find some time.

I have a simulation of the AixiZ glass lens somewhere, and if the FL is longer, the beam would be thicker with it. The triple element AixiZ glass lens is designed to reduce the distortions present with regular lenses, at the expense of some light loss in the three pieces of glass. The AR coating on all three reduces the reflective losses of 650nm light, and is essential in such a design. But the six coatings are a big part of the reason why it is not that good with 405nm. The exiting beam is much more parallel, than with any single element lens tho, except with aspherical lenses.

I would prefer my 2 to be 405 coated

I'd like about a dozen [sub] ;)[/sub]
but may only be able to pay for 1 [sub] :'([/sub]
(depending on $$ status at the time)
I'll start saving my change!

I think we're all set for at least one more batch already..

Now let's just hope they work like they were designed to.

eek! no, Igor, don't really put me down for 12. :-[ Sorry, I was just wishing - there's no way I'd be able to pay for 12 unless I suddenly have an income. One is all I can really do for sure.

I'll try one of each. More if testing looks good.

Igor, put me down for 10(maybe more) with the AixiZ attachment please. :)

Been waiting on these for a while now ;)

Done! 405nm or multilayer?

BTW, do you perhaps know where i could get the plastic AixiZ lens nut alone? I do not want to discard entire modules, and the price could be better this way. Alternatively, i could send them out as complete AixiZ modules with the custom lens.

I'll take the 405nm.

As about the plastic AixiZ lens nuts... let me know how many you need... I've got tons ;)

I'm interested in one for now. Not sure about 405nm or multilayer, maybe when the results come back.  I might buy more with those results too.

In that Deal Extreme red stage laser they sell, they have a metal lens element that fits Axiz modules just fine. Would it be possible to have them fit into those?

I would like one or maybe even two 405nm.

All these numbers are confusing, but I trust your work and I really need some lenses/modules for my blu projects.
I'm getting desperate!

This looks like the real deal!

Edit:
You're kidding?!
"The price for the first batch will be around 15 Euro ($23.6 + cost of AixiZ module) a piece"

That's like the prise of a diode! They may be effective, but not COST effective. They need to be cheaper (or less expensive), or no deal. :-/
