A scramjet is fine, too...

Scram jets are awesome. I love flying them in my space flight simulator and I think they really do have potential one day if some material and design flaws get addressed to make them more efficient.

Very, very cool! They have just combined my two favorite subjects, aviation AND lasers!

I thought there wasn't a need for spark pugs on scram jets. I always thought that air entered the scram jet's engine at such high speeds the pressure and heat inside the engine alone were enough to ignite the fuel and air mixture. That is unless the scram jet is to be firing at high altitudes were the air is much thiner.

Well the air is always gonna be thin since you have to go fast in thin air or else the dynamic pressure and heat will destroy you at lower altitudes.. The air gets compressed and heated. I'm guessing maybe the lasers would allow it to ignite at lower speed then normal?

Good stuff! Lasers have so many new applications that it boggles the mind. I predict that they will provide the ability to time-travel and produce teleportation in the distant future.

You might be able to within a few years.

Ford Developing Laser Ignition System

Jesus, can you imagine what the tuneup cost would be? those stupid triple-electrode, platinum plated spark plugs that self-weld to the engine block after a few hours of running. add to that the fact that the coil-pack and the plug boot are the same unit....

i can see it now, ford starts advertising trade-in at 20k miles as <s>affordable</s> trendy alternative to tuneups...

gah, stupid vBulletin not supporting strikethrough....
