but why are they using uv light which destroys organic matter in mars?

hahaha good point. maybe so the religious right wont be pissed off when they are proved wrong about life on other planets, cause it'll be killed on the spot.

They say it doesn't destroy the organic matter, it just causes it to fluoresce.

But I'm confused as they quote the guy talking about LEDs in one paragraph then a laser in the next  :-?

I'm guessing they're probably using a laser diode which can be focused better than an LED for finding fluorescence, not necessarily collimated, but kind of what I do when I'm searching for something fluorescent and make a "spot-light" with the beam.  But, I don't know, that article is kind of confusing.

Bah, i see some NASA guy coming into LPF one of these days to ask IgorT for a blu ray =D

Yeah the government contracted me out to use my 6x for this. I forgot to tell you guys ;D
