AMAZING!! and very scary as well. That video was very clear though for us non-scientist. I think I'll just start with some color blending. Thanks for the link....love that stuff!!

This video is very in depth for the laser path. I wish they would have added a little more of the science into the amplification and conversion into ultraviolet. Thanks again for posting this!

/\ agreed. More depth in those areas would be nice. Its a great video nevertheless.

OMG kipkay is narrorating the video!!! "Just connect each of the 192 lasers to a 9volt battery, and you're off with a controlled fusion reaction!"
Anyone else notice that sounds exactly like him?

The light amplification is by stimulated emission of radiation. (who'd'a thunk it?)

The Nd:glass is excited by the flashlamps and before most of the material has time to emit photon, the laser pulse flies past and stimulated emission occurs. If you do this through THAT many plates with THAT many beams THAT many times, you're bound to get some quality power.

The UV is frequency tripling. It's like frequency doubling to 532nm (1064/2=532), but instead to 354nm (1062/3=354)

...I think. It might be quadrupled. I can't remember.

Wow, 20 years ago I was dreaming with a controlled fussion reaction, one of the possibilites then, was this: converging multiple lasers. It's good to see that things are on the way. Hope not to wait 20 years more to see this working. My question is: can they keep the reaction sustained, or this is just a proof of concept that it can be done? I guess the second one.

Matter is made of condensed light (E=mc2), so we live in an ocean of light full of islands of matter.

cool, lets build one :gj:

How many more posts are you going to say 'cool'? We dont bump old threads unless there is new information to be added. This is a science forum. If you have nothing else to say except 'cool', you are in the wrong place.

Read more, post less, and you'll fit in.
