Benm is on to something... The pic I posted above was lit using a regular bic lighter. I scraped off a pile of shavings using a butter knife. It was really quite easy to light. If that pile of shavings were on top of a sled I'm pretty sure the whole thing would've gone up.

Grinding it up helps for several reasons... it exposes a new fresh surfaces, and small pieces are much easier to heat up, with a better surface/volume ratio to keep them burning once lit.

Also, magnalium coponents are sometimes finished with a layer of pure aluminium to improve wear resistance - pure aluminium is borderline impossible to ignite.
