Too Damn Close

Just about 10 minutes ago I had the scare of a lifetime, Im still shook up. I was using my waterproof laser in the bathroom sink, as I took my 1.3w laser out of the sink my hand slipped and the laser beam hit me directly in the eye..... BUT I was wearing my Lazerer 445nm/532nm laser safety glasses, and I can now gurantee that they work. :san: I imediatly closed my eye less than a second after the beam hit me, the laser wasnt focused ,but still I wonder what would of happend if I wasnt wearing them. Wear your damn goggles. They saved my eyes and they may save yours. Accident's happen.

My eyes are fine, the laser never even made it through the goggles, I will examine them to see if they are still usable or if they are damaged and I need to order new ones.

good thread ....i have had a close call or 2 myself but my trusty eagle pair has always been there for me

Im very careful, so this has been my second close call. I also had one before, but the laser never hit me.

Close call indeed! Good to know the goggles work! How far below the water was the laser? Cause thats another factor that could've helped you!

Glad to see that the beam did not make it through the filters at all! Out of curiosity, how diverged was the beam? I know the EaglePair yellow ones will block a focused beam, but I'm curious what level of protection the laserer ones yield.

i am too

safety glasses are a must i only dont wear them outside beam viewing or if the laser is fixed in a position(bolted down) so it cant be knocked over and hit a reflective object or my eyes

Did you get any flashblindness at all? or was it like looking at a dot?

i've been hit through glasses a few times with sub 200mw lasers, it's just like looking at the dot for a few seconds

The laser was out of the sink when It hit me, It was like a couple inches above the water, but when my hand slipped im pretty sure it hit me while it was above the water before going down. Not 100% sure.

I said it wasn't focused, but to me being focused means its a tiny dot. It was pretty dangerously focused when it hit me, just not all the way.

It was really really bright. It looked on the goggles like it was focused to a small part, like when you shine a laser on a black surface and its a smaller dot. I dont remember if I was flash blinded, but for some reason I was dizzy for a while after it. I could also see yellow on white surfaces. But if you have ever taken a peak at the dot of a 1w+ 445nm without safety glasses this is normal, but for me it lasted for a long time.

Just woke up and my eyes hurt and I have a big headache, maybe from the laser light on the goggles? Ill see if it gets better with time, and take some Aspirin. Anyone had this happen to them before? Its not my eyes that are damaged, i think its from the bright light on the goggles. I had this happen before, from a very bright flashlight shined at my face.

I had a "moment of truth" when using my goggles while working with a 445nm laser and a laser meter that had a scratched metal surface near the detector so it would reflect back. I was shining it to position it on the detector surface, and it reflected back and was very bright as the light fluoresced in my goggles. Fortunately, I had the goggles on though because damn, if that was bright, I can only imagine what it would've done to my eyes.

Also remember to bring a digital camera to check the light levels if you want to sneak a peak at the beam without the goggles on when everything is positioned correctly.

Ya ive gotten a scare from some shiny surfaces too.

I like to see the beam myself, so when the laser is stable I usually take a sneak peak, then put my goggles back on. This is probably bad for your eyes because It leaves me seeing yellow on white surfaces for a while.

Yeah, I won't even look at the spot, even on some black brick, only the beam. Gotta see the beam at least once!
