The guy in the video will definately have eye damage even if he was wearing glasses (assumingly because of the lighting cigarette scene). Glasses are the LAST line of defense with cautious laser usage. The guy with the spyder burn looks like he was was trying to burn a cross into his arm. These are most likely the same kind of people who shoot firearms into the air and think the will not cause any harm...

You are so right :) When my half bro told at his friends that he is going to get a laser pointer, his friends were like "Does it burn things?"
So are all laser for burning and popping balloons only in mind of teenager boys

I remember there was some kid on the 'laser community' :)rolleyes:) forum, defending how it was 'no big deal' to shine lasers at planes, and insinuating that people should do it to 'prove' that 'nothing happens'.

Education is one thing, yeah, but I think there are a lot of things we simply don't have much control of, and those are going to be the ones that cause us to have to pay for the actions of others.

All we can do is try and really get people to understand laser safety and that it's not a toy. Most people hear that sadly and brush it off as "a over protection" They hear "no one should get a 1W as there 1st laser, and make sure you ware the right goggles" And think... Ha, yeah right I'm not some little kid who is going point it in my eyes, They don't know how mature I am..I don't need the goggles there just trying to be over protective. I'll be fine"...

The more videos of the lighting cigarettes in your mouth with a Laser is going to Spread Very Fast. Every Person out there will see it as a party trick and as soon as it gets into more and more parties it will be the Thing that ruins our hobby. Drunk and Lighting cigarettes in your mouth with lasers is the DUMBEST thing you could ever do. It's just going to snow ball...*

It will slow the process down but we are coming to a regulated hobby soon and no one can stop the idiot that will be the "straw to break the camels back" and then "The Professional Idiots" Will write up laws that will make the hobby not even possible. Except a "illegal Underground" that is keeping it alive on the black market, we wont see many lasers and the ones we do will cost a arm and a leg.

* (No offense but as soon as the Gang Bangers find out "What" they could use a Laser for we will see a Crack Down for sure... It's just a matter of time now IMO.)

Someone will eventually point one at Obama, and then it's game over for Us. A Darwin award is given posthumously They need to try much harder.

We will see regulations soon IMO, but how strict they will be is anyones guess ATM.

I Hope I am able to build a few lasers before some one screws it up for everyone and gets lasers banned. Maybe you will have to get a license for higher powered lasers or have to register them like firearms. Anything to keep this awesome hobby alive.

Keep flagging videos and preaching safety. Seems like that is about all we can do. :spank:

I cant see a ban IMHO only the need for a licence. People drive drunk but yet they don't ban cars, people shoot each other but don't ban guns, it's just the minority of stupid people who are giving us safe and responsible laserist a bad name !

I think it will most likely be a complete ban to even own these devices. When I think about the expense and commitment of starting a licensing program, then at the ease of simply banning the ownership of such devices, I see the government taking the easy road.

I think the endgame will eventually be:
A felony to own or possess any 100mW or greater laser
A felony/fine for selling any such device within the USA
Illegal to harvest diodes from projectors and illegal to sell diodes by any private citizen for hobby use.

Think it's far fetched? I thought I would never see the day when the government was allowed to fondle your kids as long as they had a TSA uniform on to. I also thought I would never see the day when a government could force you to buy health insurance, or tell you what you could or could not eat because of the health risks....that day is on the horizon, and so is laser regulation.

Yeah but guns are protected by the constitution and we can't live with out cars.

They ban most products to make bombs, Drugs you can't even make a potato launcher. Point is, when the mass public sees something that only could be used for "Big Bad Things" then they do Ban them and from you from making them.

When I look at the future I see thses as the two possibilities. I however think it will most likely be a complete ban to even own these devices. ^^^ Agree, It's not right but I have to agree :( I think it will take awhile for all that to happen but with the idiots we are seeing lately getting 1W 445nm (the cursed 2 edge sword) it's going come

I could see an age limit to owning and purchasing lasers. And I believe that would solve some of the issues. Even though the guy in that video would most likely meet and age requirements.

I don't understand how ignorant some people can be!

Have you ever seen the news report with Dave from awesome lasers? He shines the arctic across the river and into the windows of the building!

Anyone else see the hypocrisy?

My former employer had a letter from BATF hung on his wall stating they did not care one bit about his massive spud launcher. It seems they determined they did not have jurisdiction. The letter wished him luck at setting a world record with it and to have fun.

I'm not sure I've fully processed the awesomeness of this quote, because my head has not yet imploded.

Image of more laser stupidity :(
laserburn2.jpg

""This skin burn was caused by a 800mW laser ,the image is from unverified source on a forum of a lad drunk and using hand portable laser, class 4 , 445nm""

This is just self-mutilation. It has nothing to do with lasers as it's a psychological disorder.
In this case it could simply be due to the alcohol, but if he didn't have a laser he probably would of inflicted harm on himself with something else, like a disposable razor.

Why would that make it any different? He still falls into the category of "doing a retarded thing irresponsibly with a laser". And so what ever factors are behind it doesn't really matter do they?

it's different for the same reason that we're not going to ban guns simply because some depressed teenager shoots himself in the face. likewise, lasers should not be banned solely on the fact that mentally unstable persons use them to feed their disorders.
