Quality of WickedLaser LaserShades for 650nm red lasers?

Hi everbody,

recently I bought the WickedLasers LaserShades for red lasers of 650nm. But before entrusting my eyesight to them, I wanted to test their quality. So the easiest test I could imaginge, was to shoot with a 5mW 650nm red laser (bought at Aixiz) on the shades. What I expected was the shades to stop the laser beam completely. So when aiming at a white sheet of paper, I can see the red laser dot and I expected to see no dot anymore, when I put the shades between the laser and the paper. However the dot still was visible quite well with the shades in the laser beam.

Should it be like that?

I searched the forums for those goggles, but could only find old posts and reviews from 2008 for the "red" goggles and newer posts saying that they changed in the meantime. But no new review or anything the like.

So, are there any additional insights on the quality of these shades or any feedback why my test might be wrong?

Your test is not wrong, it's just insufficient. With goggles meant for 650nm, usually some red is still visible.

The problem is without a laser power meter, LPM, there is no way to see how much light is being passed though.

WL goggles are very hit, and miss. If I were you, I would consider ordering from a more reputable source. There are several links in my signature.

Yes, I also thought, that the power of the transmitted red beam should be reduced. But I do not have a LPM to verify

This confuses me a bit. So, the red laser has a wavelength of 650nm and the shades should block 650nm. And the lasers WL sells these goggles for are way more powerful than my 5mW one. So if already with this laser so much light is transmitted, I think I do not want to know what happens for a laser with several 100mW or even 1W...

After reading here a bit before posting I also came to the conclusion, that I do not want to trust those goggles too much and ordered EaglePair goggles from SurvivalLaser. But I still would like to know if the WL ones are "dangerous" or if I could safely use them.
So if somebody has those googles and a LPM, I would be happy about a review . Or is there a cheap way to build a LPM?
