Open case DVD and Blu Ray...

Hi,
I'm planing to build PC case where DVD and Blu Ray drives would be open behind transparent case and facing a user.
I assume that it is safe because drives have a lens that focuses ray at few mm where disc should be and will not produce a focused ray to user distance?

I would like confirmation or negation of someone with more experience.
(Should I install stripe of some material at lens position)

The focus in on the DVD, so not somewhere else. It's also between the dvd players lens and the DVD, so there's hardly any light coming out of there. And the most important aspect: there's no collimated beam escaping. I think it would be safe to use.

If, from any point you can see the focal spot hitting the disk, install a shield. While I doubt this is the case, you never know. Watch out for IR light from some units, as well.

I always wondered why some company didn't produced a blu-ray drive that took the "left-over" light and guided it to a lit emblem, like the blu-ray symbol. You could charge another $100 just for that gimmick, which can probably be accomplished with a well-molded clear plastic piece..

Not that easy, I think. Remember, the sled with the BD/DVD diodes can move forward and backwards along the disc. You'd have to get a stretchable piece of plastic, or you'd have a bright area around where the plastic piece begins.

The OPs idea sounds great, would love to see how it turns out in the end. :beer:

I think it would be possible, but very difficult to produce. And 405nm is violet, people would complain they got a violet-ray player instead of a blue-ray :)

You can't just take the cover off a drive and expect it to work.

If you take the cover off the drives, you'll notice a little plastic nugget on the top half of the drive.

The disc is clamped magnetically between the nugget and the spindle. That's what stops it from spinning out of balanced.

I have tried it without that thing, it does NOT work.

I thought reflected rays might be a problem in this set up, but obviously not according to this picture...

I personally don't think its a good idea... but if you think it would be safe to do so, 'm awaiting pictures :p
