Thankfully it was a <5mw red, not a +5mw green :-[
Well yeah; that's what I meant. I looked into the red one in my sig a couple of times and when the batteries started running down, I looked into it more. It's like a bright red point. I wouldn't even think of doing that with my green one.

This "milan karakas" is not the sharpest tool in the shed... there is some thing
called Common Sense.... And this guy obviously has none..

Just change "laser" to "White Hot molten metal" and "shine" to "touch"
and "eye" to "finger"... and I don't think his "experiment" would have been
done... and at least not twice... IMO ::)

He might be the type that can't be let alone with 2 nails and a power outlet...

Then the stories goes like

"what if i take a nail in each hand, and insert them in the socket?

... but that's dangerous, so i'll try do to it briefly...

kkZZZZZAAP!"

Surviving that, he climbs a HV utility pole and tries again....

I don't think he's just simply stupid. He probably got used to the risks he took working out for him which leads to complacency. His intuitions and reality parted ways but I guess that's fixed now at the cost of his eyesight. As for scanning the beam across his eye after the accident, the fear of permanent eye damage would make anyone take risks for reassurance that everything's OK. You go into panic mode and do things you wouldn't normally do if you think there's a chance it will give you relief.

If he does it again, however, then he is just stupid.

high powered lasers are great for DIY laser eye surgery, and it's cheaper  ;)

Allthrough this was VERY informational (How to know when you are close to getting damaged and such).
I was worried myself that my little 180mw red diode damaged my vision (Its dead now however... had no lens for it so it doesn't matter really...).

But who the HECK "scans" his own eyes with a 15mw laser pointer >_<....... everyone knows this "Dont look into the sun it will make you blind.." the sun is only about 3mw of power and then this idiot shines 5 times the sun into his eyes.... stupidity...

Anyway nice information to know when ill get my Green 50mw and my Dilda.

You would be surprised how many people believe that staring into the sun cannot be dangerous... just because its such a natural thing. Obviously drowing in the just as natural ocean does sound feasible to them, but somehow that never makes the point ;)

Somehow i don't feel all that sorry for people that manage to damage their own eye by pointing a laser directly at it... a hit and hurt by an unexpected reflection is much more emphatic, but luckily something that doesnt happen all that often.

I guess some people just need to burn their fingers on the stove to learn not to touch it when it's hot.

We may all think that this article is 'stupid' and is 'common sense' to not put your eye into a laser. BUT I have some bad news for all of us....

...THIS is how the general population thinks!!! "Oh wow... bright light... wonder how bright it is in my eye!!". We all know the dangers of lasers, but this is the kind of thing that happens when kids can get strong green pointers for under 20 bucks.

WE ALL know better, but DONT assume that the general population knows better, because they dont. It's scary how stupid people are.

When I was young and playing with torchlights, I used to shine it on semi-reflective surfaces, like polished tiles, or varnished furniture. Then I'd notice two spots: the spot which the light casts on to the surface, and a reflection of the light itself. I wondered what happened when those two overlapped, and tried it. Turns out, that's the way to hit yourself spot on with reflected light.

Luckily, it was only torches, so, definitely not with a laser now!

(Curiousity can get the better of you in many ways you'd never think of!)

I agree, and for some youngsters "Wow a worm!!!" *Eat it*

from 1st post, what actually made him do this and then to try it out multiple times to check if the first time he damaged his eye??? I wonder if those b vitamins and specifically beta carotene will actually help, if even a little.

Staring into the laser on my mouse is enough to make me feel slightly nauseous and dizzy so I could only imagine the negative cognitive effects of a much stronger beam.

Also, I read somewhere (the source is out there on the internet) that the US Army were using green lasers to dazzle "the terrorists" as a non-lethal option as apparently it's much safer to blind a "terrorist" driving a car laden with explosive material towards you than to shoot them still.....

That's probably from WL, called the "Photonic Disrupter". It was featured on Discovery.

Despite his unbelievable ignorance and stupidly. I found it an interesting read purely from informational point of view. He did a good job explaining with the pictures how it affected his eyesight. I see that's what damage to the rods and cones of the eye will do. Now had that been a 200mW laser he would be blind. That fool is lucky he can still see at all.

Want to hear how dumb i once was?

I won 1000$ from poker, and wasted 300$ on a 50mW green laser (with IR filter)
i gazed straight down the ''hole'' when the batteries where low. i only saw a weak red light and got abit confused .. I thought it was supposed to be green! so i gazed down a minute more!

later i realised that my greenie would sometimes light up when running low on batteries .. i was lucky as hell. And learned my lesson. Never again :)

Had it for over a year, never even got near my eyes, after i read about the dangers online
