I do love God, however it's up to us laser lovers to keep them out of cockpits. 15 incidents a month!?! Have the people of that city and other like it become that anti social and psychotic. So glad I don’t live in a big city any more. When I shine a laser into the night sky I have nothing but a big empty sky.
I feel bad for the pilots these days. 3M or the likes need to come up with a reactive film that blocks any light that exceeds safe limits. I know that’s way easier said than done but with things like 'photonic transistor' technology something like that seems quite possible.

There's a big difference between shining a laser into the open night sky and purposely targeting the cockpit of a low-flying aircraft...

This is no different than shooting a gun at a police helicopter... It's stupid, and the people doing it probably already knew it was stupid. They did it intentionally, and I'm glad they were caught and prosecuted.. My concern is that the media is going to continue to hype this without context, and people are going to move for harsher regulations against lasers, without realizing this only affects f**ing moronic people who sit on aircraft runways, purposely targeting the cockpits of landing aircraft, when in reality they could do just as much damage with a pellet gun or by throwing rocks.. Sure, lasers can be dangerous, but not by pointing them into empty regions of sky, only by purposely aiming them at the cockpits of low flying or landing aircraft. If my laser accidentally hits the bottom of a 747 flying at 35,000ft, no one will notice or care.. If they happen to have a camera that points at the ground it'll show a brief green dot, but the pilots will not notice in any way. I just hate how the media sensationalizes the danger, risking the hobby for everyone.

Yeah, I just got my first real laser, I would really like for morons not to ruin it for me,(and US, this entire community of laser enthusiasts)

I hope 6 months in prison will send a strong message to any other idiots with lasers. Definitely the worst punishment I've read about so far (someone else can enlighten me).

The other side of that is too often, they're too stupid to even know it's stupid. They just think it's "cool". Next we'll read about some kids driving around DUI aiming lasers at other drivers. That's bound to happen.

People like that do ruin too many things for those of us who want to legally and responsibly enjoy certain things in life, and it's not limited to owning lasers.

One reason I too decided to get started on this hobby now is because I'm afraid that if I waited any longer, I wouldn't be able to legally own a laser. If that happens, it would be because of idiots like that.

Perhaps powerful lasers are a bit like guns in this respect - do not point them at anything you do not want to destroy.

I'm sure no laser pointer will ever be the single cause of an airplane accident, but it could contribute by making things worse.

This happened a few days ago, you can read the comments to get the general public's reaction. Most of them dont think we should ban lasers altogether ( since anyone with a gun poses just as much a threat) but some of them are ridiculous.

Well, once it hits the news more people get the idea to do these things... unfortunately that is how it works with the media.

I suppose one thing that adds to the problem is powerful lasers getting cheaper, for $50 or less you can now buy something that could actually annoy a pilot - 15 years ago that money bought a harmless cat toy at best.

With these things available for prices kids can afford, and the internet to get them ordered, it's not likely to stop. I doubt a ban would even help - there are always ways around those that last for a while, and when busted a new one shows up just as quickly.

A ban would only adversely effect the more expensive part of the market, since we wouldnt want to order our $500 equipment from a shady postbox somewhere up in hong kong which doesnt last enough to build any reputation.

I went outside the other night and was practicing turning off street lights with my new optotronics 150mW but there were many military planes flying around so I stopped as soon as I saw them in the area. I guess thats what I get for living so close to a military airport
