Default LedShoppe 50mw IR leakage?

I just got a 50mw green laser from LedShoppe (http://www.ledshoppe.com/Product/ledp/LP1076.htm) and I was wondering if they output dangerous amounts of IR. I've heard rumors they lack IR filters. Is there any way I could test for this? I do not want to mess up my eyes

Thanks.

Hey Trogdor, if you don't have safety goggles already make sure you get some.

You can test for IR with an LPM and and IR filter lens. Test the power without the lens and then test with the lens in place. The difference should be how much IR your laser is putting out.

I think there should be no problem looking at a dot from a ledshoppe 50mw pointer for lets say 20-30 seconds. your eyes will be stressed, of course, but looking at the dot should not be that dangerous at all.

Whether IR leakage is dangerous or not is an argument that has been going on for years. I personnally think it's not dangerous, because the IR stays collimated with the green so well enough that you would have to be shining the green right next to your eye to get IR in it (which you should know never to do anyways). If you live in the US, I would get the OEM goggles. The shipping is so high on the DLs that they would be the same price. And your LEDshoppe laser is leaking IR; they always do.

IR from a 50mW pen is almost never dangerous

The green light from your laser is much more dangerous than any IR leakage from it.
