We all make mistakes, thats what makes us human and who we are,
Hell when I was younger I made the mistake of welding with the wrong Goggles on took almost a month for my eyes to heal, Hell I was messing around with a 30mw today in a white room and now I'm remebering what welding flash burn feels like in my eyes. like someone poured a bucket of sand in my eyes.
one quick piece of advice if you are experience dry eye go get some cheap eye drop to keep the eye moist

I know your pain, man. I burned my retinas with lasers at least twice. I even have pictures of my retinas taken by the optometrist. I thought they were so cool I had them email them to me. Now, I don't fuck around, I always wear goggles when reflections are a hazard, and there's absolutely no chance I won't wear them when burning up close.
Well, all and all not too bad of a report from the eye doc... My right retina has some scaring but should slowly heal over time. my left retina looks like its almost completely healed. My field of vision is fine and he said I should just throw my laser away...
I'll be using my goggles for any indoor lasering form now on ... that was too close of a call for me

Glad to see you'll be ok.
Stories like yours really made me think when I was new to the hobby. The first thing I did when I started to learn about lasers was to research about safety, and I didn't start to work on my first laser until a few days ago when I got my safety goggles.
I'm glad this thread got stickied, and I really hope it knocks some sense into people.

This is really good news, driving is fun and you do not want to miss out on it I'm just glad I'm only slightly short-sighted, and will get that corrected when my eyes stop growing. (Lasik does things to you when you're still growing apparently) I've ordered my first laser (a DX True 30) along with some goggles. Yes I know they're not a must-have for a 30, but I will be moving on in the future and it's good to be prepared.

I was wondering this as well . . . what are the power levels where safety glasses should be used. Obviously you shouldn't look into any laser that's powered on, but where do reflections off glass become dangerous as compared to more diffuse reflections? Is there any set of rules that can be followed?
