You can hardly compare lasers and light bulbs. A 60 watt bulb is relatively harmless, but a 60 watt laser is another story altogether. The difference, of course, is that the power from a light bulb is spread out while in a laser it's all consentrated into a thin beam. Therefore, if you look diectly at a 60W bulb the most you will get is an annoying after-image for a couple of minutes. Look directly into a 60W laser beam, and you can say buh-bye to your vision!

Where was I comparing 60W lasers and lightbulbs?

My point is, every day sources of light can be far more intense than 5mW lasers. It doesn't matter whether it's a laser or just any regular light source, they are both focused down onto your retina.

Is a light bulb really focused down onto your retina?

Yes, everything is. Your eye is a lens. The issue with lasers is because they're focused, it's easier to get higher power densities into your eye, but when you're only talking 5mW, damage is extremely unlikely.

Could you see the beam in a dark room?
With 5mw"cat chasers" you can't see the beam , only the dot.

If you can't see the beam in a dark room or it takes those little watch batteries its PROBABLY 5mw or less.
Though its not a true measure of its power.

Oh and smack that guy and take away his laser.

Morons like that shouldn't have lasers if they cant be responsable.

Thats how lasers get a bad name.

there are alot of reds you cant see as well which makes that last statement false.. I have tried to get a good pic of my 685nm red but that beam is so hard to capture even with smoke.. and it is arround 35mw I can also see a faint dark red dot on my 808 but there is no beam and they can goto over 1W..

Really I dont mean to scare you but who knows what laser the kid may have had was it a home made job or a store baught toy. I still would never risk my eye's Like I said you only have 2 and they CAN NOT be replaced yet maybe in 2020.. It is allway's best to be safe than sorry after it is too late..

I remember reading that T_J received some permanent eye damage from a 15-20mW green pointer once.
I believe he got a direct hit. A 100mW direct hit is fully capable of causing permanent damage.
But there are many factors involved.

Check out the eye charts that Things mentioned.
If your still worried you can always go see your eye doctor.
Just because it was ~100mW doesn't mean you definitely received damage, but you need an expert to tell you that.

I once got an indirect hit off a 200 mW green, was worried, then I went to see an eye doctor. Had no damage. It really isn't THAT easy to get permanent damage. Then again, it wasn't a direct hit and the beam was reflected through a prism.

If I see my friend again soon I can take pictures; will that help determine if it was "over-spec?"

As far as how the laser pointer looked, it looked just like a heavy duty pen, dark blue with a pen clip.

from the sounds of it, your friend is a fucking idiot. the kind who points lasers at planes

if i was you i'd be finding new friends.
