Building it yourself! Is it legal?

So I've been working on the designed for a laser that I want to build but I don't know what is allowed and what is not... I live in Canada of that changes anything.

In Canada there are very few regulations, especially governing personal usage. you should be all good to build your system yourself. Things might change if you try to sell your creations, though, but for personal use you should be all good.

And no - it's not illegal to build/own a laser in Canada. It's illegal to sell it if it doesn't meet the proper requirements, based on power output, etc.

So a 350mw laser needs things like a 5 second startup delay, shutter, key switch/tailcap, dead-man switch, operational notifier, and so on.

I think it's also illegal to import lasers without the proper requirements though I've had lots of them get through so I don't know about that last one.

But building them yourself is no problem.

To clarify - is that for selling to the US from Canada, or even to sell to other Canadians?

Because I wasn't aware of those requirements for selling lasers in Canada to other Canadians. Where are they from / codified in law?
