So with 300 + mW portable lasers being so darn easy to procure these days. Has anybody done serious harm to themselves yet, on this forum, what feels like sharing their experience? I read through the "laser safety" section of wikipedia, and it was pretty thin on the reported cases of permanent eye damage. I figured that there was probably more permanent eye damage to be found in these forums.

Even when I've played with a laser after having a few too many glasses of wine, I still have the common sense to not look into the beam. DUH! ::) By the way, red HeNe's look nice through a glass of Cabernet! :)

Well he did a service to us all! I want to see if there are any longer term studies done on the effects of diffuse laser light on the human eye. I have access to sci finder, but if anyone already knows, point me in the right direction.

Anecdotally I can say I've been playing with lasers (mostly HeNe) for a lot of years, and in the past 10 or so, many of the 5mW diodes (red). I've spent a lot of time looking at the spot on whatever target it was on, as well as getting more than my share of occasional reflections - some times from tiny specs of stuff that were reflective (a piece of mica in a rock, for example). My vision is still as good as it was 20 years ago, my night vision is still good... I'm 44. I suspect that laser light under a specific threshold is not a big problem for short duration. The new class of lasers I'm playing with now, however, I need to remember to not be so casual with! :)

Yeah, I'm a little worried about "one wrong move", because I jumped in and bought a 300 mW green laser. My roommate walks around with the second pair of safety glasses on a regular basis.

That's pretty similar to what I was getting some time ago.I sometimes got this partial temporary blindness where parts of my field would become totaly blind, sometimes the center, sometimes the top or just one side, associated with headaches. The blind part wasn't black or white or any color, I almost didn't even notice it.But I was trying to read something and realized that I couldn't see the letters in the center of my view and couldn't sense any movement in that part.I asked a friend to wave his hand in my blind side and I couldn't tell if it was moving or not.
Very strange, and very very very annoying.I usually went to sleep for about an hour and it would go away.Haven't had one for about a year or two so I guess I'm good.

I'm glad I'm not the only one :) Anyway I think it's just stress or fatigue related, no real eye damage. But anyway, the thaught of getting that permanently from a laser accident is really scary. When you think that way the value of a pair of goggles is like 10 times more than their price sooo.....buy goggles ppl!!! ::)

AMEN!!!

I can't even imagine the "OH SH!$" Moment when I realize that I've Smoked my eyes!!!

When you get to the Power levels we"Laserists" deal with on a daily basis.....goggles become your best friend.....

What got me was the realization that the BLINK REFLEX isn't even fast enough to save you!!

I don't know about you...but I always thought I could blink pretty fast!!

Get Goggles...and keep your eyesight!!!

Ive had the unfotunate exprice of having 75mw of green laser in my eye it dosent hurt but you definetly notice it and i now have a small brown patch on my eye but my other eye compensates for the small loss of vision so no biggie but the first thing i did was buy goggles.

I ordered goggles from WL two days ago. Even with the across-the-world shipping cost, it's still a small price to pay considering I like to melt plastic with mine - and it gets all liquidy and shiny and reflects.... Goggles - nice, blindspots - baaaaaad. :)

Heh i figured out fast that lots of things turn all reflective and shiny when melting :(. I was melting some chocalate (why melt plastic when you can melt chocalote that makes your whole room smell like warm choclalte Mmmm) and i figured out that it gets reflective because it reflected in my eye, luckl it was spread out because its not a good miror so i was okay. I almost ordered goggles but it died like right before i was going to order and that was the fourth diode ive killed, so im just going to stick to bought lasers for now.

...lazer.... :'( :'( :' (recalls memorys of lighting fireworks from 4 feet with that one)
